how do you take apart a bass tuner key without damaging it to much? there is a cover enclosing the gears for the tuner key but I can't seem to pop it off (without damaging the finish, scratching it up and what not) so how do you take it off? I need to tighten the screw inside there cause the pole is getting a bit lose
Hi. I've done it by removing the button first and wiggling the worm shaft to determine how much slack there is. If the shaft moves considerably, I've just tapped the end of the tuner shaft where the string goes with a mallet, while holding the tuner in my palm, the worm shaft between my thumb and forefinger. The cover should pop right off. Be prepared to replace the tuner though, the "repair" doesn't always work. Regards Sam
+1 It's usually only a temporary fix. If you have what I suspect are the standard GOTOH or GOTOH style sealed tuners, you're probably better off just replacing the tuner. Bass Parts Resource and others sell them for about 14 to 18 dollars each, so that might be a better option.
