Talentless Bass Players Thinking They're GOD

I had a mild experience of being spoken down to by a guy because I am currently without a band while I study to be a session musician.

He was talking to me as if he was the best bass player in the world.

I was judging a "Battle of the Bands"

I watched him specifically for much of the time and was shocked. In the first song he hit so many wrong notes I felt sorry for him, after all, he had just spent 30 minutes telling me how great he was.

In the second song he looked at my amp (he was using my amp because it's part of the backline) and his lead, walked forward and stood on his lead so it came out so people couldn't hear him playing, then proceeded to jump around like a wounded duck for 25 minutes.

He then complained when his band didn't get through and blamed the lead coming out on my amp, not the fact that his lead was 10ft long and he was 30ft away from it.

I challenged him to a bass-off after this. He declined.

At people like that u just got to sit there and laugh. People are always going to make it seem like they r better then u its human nature, ive had the same thing happen to me before too. Turns out the guy picks up the bass and is a dud all he could do was play this one slap groove and he thought he was so good, everytime he tryed to play something else fingure style he would mess up and go off beat. U could tell thats all the guy practices is slap bass . I mean yea slap bass is cool and everything but what realy makes u a good player is being versatile and if u ask me if u r a bass player and all u could do is play some slap grooves that sound harder then what they r u suck. What makes this story even sader is that the guy was 40 and im 19.

Well, its easy to misinterpret on-line chatter that looks illiterate. I didnt' read alembicguy's response as him being "chewed up"; but if it bothers you, use punctuation.

to be honest, if someone plays bass because they're a "failed guitarist" then they have no right to pick up the instrument. What makes them think that because they couldn't handle a guitar, with a smaller scale length, less distance between the strings and less weight, that they can just pick up a bass and become the best bassist in the world?

My buffalo fingers won't fit on any guitar yet. I think that I will be a pretty good bass player because I can cover six frets. On a six string that is over 3 octaves in one position. There are a lot of grooves that fit in without much work at all with hands this big. I am sure that I am not the only one here that will suffer with a shorter scale and less distance between the strings.

And my attitude prevents me from being a god. I just wish everyone could be as humble as me ....

I'm seeing more and more slap backlash. Most players I meet refuse to use it in a band setting. Thank God, it was about time.

Edit: Specifically in a rock setting, I should add.

Oh brother, I'd like to take a poll of this thread on age. I'm pushing close to 40 and when I'm confronted by some kid that can slap and play on a 6 string, I grab a full Heineken and drink it in one gulp.

Aye its stupid. Heck the only reason i'm teaching myself slap at the moment is because i love RHCP so i need it for a few songs. If it weren't for that i would be studying ALL theory and fingering technique

Cheese, Don't get me wrong....SLAP has its place and can be a very nice compliment. Keep doing what you doin.

i just let people play whatever they want. thats how the playing of any instrument progresses. everyone plays bass differently even if the differences are minimal. even if someone isn't incredibly technical, their playing can still contain exciting ideas or generate new perspectives on the instrument.

If you don't stop allowing morons to yank your chain, they'll soon start to drag you down to their level. And then you'll be regarded as one of them...

sorry if you misunderstood me. I meant judging people by whether or not they can do slap is stupid. I am not extremely experience and if it were not for the type of music i want to play i wouldn't of taught myself slap right away i would of waited until later.
