Talk me out of a Dingwall AB1

Just another way to look at it.... I don't think I'd ever buy a bass that locks me into using only one type (or a limited number) of strings :hmm: .... man if you don't like the sound and feel of those special length strings, you are kind of sunk (that's assuming most set's aren't long enough to be used on the 'low' side of the neck.

There are actually quite a number of strings suitable for Dingwall basses. You just have to look around. There are DR, Dean Markley, Ken Smith and a few others available that will work on the low B. For the other strings you can use anything that you want.

I was leery of this too...until I heard that some DRs work and a few others as well. Then I played the bass, and really enjoy the sound of both it and its strings...my last bass I was always trying different strings to see if I could get what I was looking for, and couldn't. Now I don't even think about it.

I currently have two sets of strings in use...one's soaking in denatured alcohol while the other's on the bass. I find I can use a set about 3 times before they're gone. By that time (about 2 or 3 months between two sets) I'll have ordered in a few new sets. No problems.

There are a lot of people out there who are willing to quote Sheldon as if his words were a mantra. I'm not one of those (not just with him but with anyone), but I think the strings are a winner. They mate quite well with the bass.

A little known benefit of fanned frets:
Because of the angle, or fanning of the frets, more surface area comes into contact with the string, this means longer fret life!!

As far as the comment regarding strings:
I have found Dingwall strings to be nothing short of fantastic!! I have never gotten a "dud" in the 40-50 or so(maybe more, maybe less)sets I have had over many years. I have never had another brand of strings on my bass only because I have never NEEDED another brand. Keep in mind the only Bass I have put "Flats" on in over 20 years has two F-holes and a 44" string length......BUT......I heard that the flat wounds are on their way so worry not!!

In the mean time one of our customers is having success with Ken Smith Slick Rounds 4-string set + an XL length .130 Slick Round single. I'm not sure if he's using the Tapered single or not.

He trims the silk at the nut then quickly flashes off the fuzz with a match.

Lowphat, in another post you were wondering about the date of your bass. Email me your serial number. Records from that era were burned, but I'll be able to at least tell you the year.
