Talkbox on a bass?

I would rather use a talkbox than a normal wah pedal, to be quite honest...wah pedals just don't do it for me. I've made 3 talkboxes in my time and actually got one to work (but it's a pain to hook up) and finally for Christmas got my hands on a Rocktron Banshee. If you dial it in right, it works great for bass. The only downside is the tubing that came with it, but that's fixable with about 5-8 dollars worth of stuff at Home Depot.

It really impresses people to play Daft Punk's "Human After All" and actually get the "Yeah" sound on the basses. :)

That's the one I am interested in. Someone has one for sale in my area for 70 bucks. Does that one mute your bass when activated or is your bass still in the mix?

Ron Long...Check out some of the other videos - I think he's using the SWR MO'Bass to get some nasty synth sounds.

It's muted when engaged on the Bashee 1. The Banshee 2, your signal will still pass through to the output and through the driver. An easy way around it is to get a cheap DI box like the Behringer DI400P or some kind of splitter. I am trying to build a splitter to put the Banshee before modulation on a separate board, so I have the whammy and dirt before it and run the rest to the modulation. It's well worth 70 dollars, considering a signal splitter to fix the muted when engaged problem is an easy fix.

Picked up a Banshee 2 this week. I'll fart around with it a bit at home then introduce it at my band's next rehearsal. At this point I plan on using it on

  • Chorus part of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground"
  • Chorus of "Sweet Child O' Mine"
  • BEP "I Got A Feelin',".... That could really be interesting because we often open an evening with that song
  • "Come Together"

I'll report back.....maybe with video.....when we pull this off. Got a non-paid benefit gig coming up on May 18th, so that's a likely time to launch into this....if the sponsors hate it, they can dock my pay ;)

I built several talkboxes over the years. One design would be pretty nice with bass.

I built a talkbox for our guitar player. He was frustrated with the dropout in volume and the difficulty he had hearing the talkbox through the monitors as he only had one working ear (the other eardrum was destroyed by welding slag.)

The talkbox inserted between the amp and speaker. The switch on the box switched the output of the amp to the talkbox. I built a 300Hz low pass crossover (the talkbox driver already had a cap to restrict low end( and wired it so when the talkbox was switched on, the signal would still go to the guitar amp speaker through the low pass.

It worked great and would work for bass too. One could modify an existing talkbox easily. The low pass crossover could be as simple as a choke/coil.
