I would bet money there where some fixes in Stop Making Sense.

I agree. Playing quality is way too perfect. It's really hard to dance and play the bassline perfectly timed, throughout. Presence of timing errors would "prove" it was the originally recorded sound.

It was comical with The Last Waltz. It was obvious. Danko's hands would be flailing all over the neck while what we heard was a tight bass line that didn't come close to matching his hands. That one disappointed me so much that I threw away the DVD. I need to at least "believe" I'm watching a live performance. And when it is blatantly obvious that I'm watching the equivalent of a music video, well, it ruins it for me.

If I recall correctly, Stop Making Sense was always billed as a movie about a concert, not a live concert video. They really did play, but I believe it was filmed over two nights and footage from the two performances was edited together. I would be surprised if there weren't also some edits and overdubs in the process.

The sound of the drum machine in Psycho Killer is also not really coming from the boom box and one of the backup singers is harmonizing from backstage on "Heaven."

If I recall correctly, Stop Making Sense was always billed as a movie about a concert, not a live concert video. They really did play, but I believe it was filmed over two nights and footage from the two performances was edited together. I would be surprised if there weren't also some edits and overdubs in the process.

Yeah. Back in the day I was too much of a "perfectionist" regardng live concert videos. I come from the era of live concert albums and expected them to simply be the concert recording with video. I have old Genesis concerts and the Pink Floyd Pulse concert that I would bet are the original soundtrack. Same with the two Eagles concerts.

But I just come from a paradigm when I expect someone recorded the sound and image from the concert. That seems to have changed over time. I am aware that many seem to assume that a lot of modern pop concerts are mimed by the singers. Heck, with all the high energy dancing they do while singing, it would be necessary.

I think that they're being careful to call it a movie about a concert was precisely to acknowledge that it was a different thing than the live concert video kind of thing you're talking about.

Well, it's like you said, it's a "movie about a concert". Kinda like "The Last Waltz".

And I'll add, like so many things in life, it's about managing expectations. Like the airport where people were complaining about the wait for luggage at baggage claim. the solution was to increase the length of the path from the gate to baggage claim. Complaints stopped.

If I had expected The Last Waltz to be a movie about a concert, I probably would not have thrown the DVD away.
