Tanglewood/Cort

Hey,
Im finding it really hard to find any decent information about Tanglewood. I really like the Canyon II an dit falls into my budget nicely but reading on here it seems information is hard to come by.

Does anyone know wether the Canyon II is of the same quality and spec as the Cort Curbow? I would go in search of a Curbow but according to their website they dont make one for a Lefty.
Anyone know much about Tanglewood or play the Canyon II?

Thanks
Dean

I'm just back from a week in Abu Dhabi seeing an old friend.

We went downtown to play some guitars & basses in the local music shops.

There were a *lot* of Ibanez & Corts. I played a wide cross-section of Corts and was pretty amazed at the quality from the cheapest to the most expensive.

I played a 'Made in Indonesia' Fat Strat-type priced at 700.00 Dirhams (£100/$200) - the fit/finish/frets were good and the pups were mellow. Needed a setup (they all did) but terrific value for money and great potential.

The one which took my fancy was a 'Made in Korea' 6 string bass. It had the best 'B' I've ever played (D'Addario) and was around 3000.00 Dirhams. Its setup was better, but still could be improved.

I found the Corts available out there well worth looking at.

Im sold on the look of the Tanglewood, it just worries me a little that no one on this huge forum has any real experience with them.

Does nobody play a Tanglewood bass?

I know a guy who was one of the first people in England to get one of these Tanglewood basses with a Curbow shape, because it was a prototype (that was a couple of years ago now). He was very impressed with it and still has it as his main bass.

Similarly, I also have a friend who has bought one, but he's got it for sale at the moment (I think) because it doesn't suit him. Probably due to the body shape making it tricky to balance, which I've heard of being an issue with the shape in question.

I got to play one at Sounds Live in Newcastle with a nice spalted top and I was very impressed. For the money, it was a very good bass. Played well, nice tone, looked good.

I realise that this is a bit of an old thread, but I just bought myself a Tanglewood Canyon II (not yet arrived) and I wanted to throw in my 2pence worth.....

I've been playing a Tanglewood for the past 13 years and I have to say I never cease to be amazed by how good their basses are for the price. I picked up a Tanglewood Baron 4-string bass (limited edition apparently) from a guitar shop back when I was 17, it was my first real bass. The build is fantastic (much the same as the Canyon); 5 piece laminate through neck, slimline body with a nice curvy shape, beautifully made and finished with EMG J & P pickups with an active circuitry which provided an amazing versatility in the sound. The hardware is brass throughout and gives it a nice funky look. In all the years I've played it, and the 100+ gigs that I've used it for, it's never failed on me, not once. I have a few other bass player friends who own Warwicks and other top brand basses, and they've all commented on how well the Tanglewood stacks up against them, in some cases outstripping the twice as expensive brand for build, sound and playability.

This knowledge and experience of Tanglewood has led me to buy another one, I just hope that it lives up to its predecessor :o)

I've had a Tanglewood Warrior ii for a few years and I love it. It has one of the best neck profiles I've ever seen (or felt, I should say) and the stock MM style pup is pretty good. It didn't cost much either, less than 160 GBP new with a case! The original New Model Army bassist uses one, but with a seymore duncan pup.

I've been looking at a Tanglewood Curbow bass, and came across this old thread when doing a search, probably like you did Chuck!

Looks like this thread is dead or at least sleeping but, if you can find one they are worth worth a shot.
I have the Canyon I, black Luthite body and I love the bass. I can only imagine the solid wood bodies sound better. The body shape/size will take some getting used to but they are great, underrated and knew lay unknown basses.
