I've a set of Fender tapewounds on my '77 G3 & am finding they give a nice bright slap sound. Brighter than my sets of flats.

Tapes brighter than flats?

Fender tapewounds are particulary bright sounding; they also have a rougher feel than others.
If you want a warmer sounding (and much smoother feeling) tapewound, you should try Rotosound or Labella, IMO.

The D'Addario Tapes I used on a Squier P had a very deep, woody tone. I don't know if I'd call it "bright"; more like "organic", if that makes any sense.
Most tape wound strings are round wound strings wrapped with the nylon. I would attribute the brightness to this fact
Only a few tape wound strings have actual flats under them. I'm sure these are mellow. The Roto's are flatwound with nylon tape.

Rotos are quite mellow. My Realistic violin bass came to me with a set. I liked them but they're too dark for that bass. I would love to have a Fender with them, though I don't know if I could get used to the thickness.
This is a very common mistake, one which I made too. Rotosound tapewounds are in fact roundwounds wrapped in nylon tape. I was told this by Rotosound.
Yeah. I find them more articulate for sure. I have GHS's on a J bass which are great. I just got a set of Dadarrios on a short scale semi and I'm not so sure. They seem a bit 'ringy".
I put a set of those on my Gibson SG standard and they sound brighter than the Gibson roundwounds that came with the bass.

I've got Labella tapes on another bass & yes, they are darker sounding.
I do like the versatility of the brighter tapes tho.
Seems they can go from a real 60's thump to a funky finger style clarity.

I too was floored by the amount of high end produced by a set a LaBella Tapes I just put on one of my basses!
The thump was as expected, but there was so much treble, I had to dial back the treble knob. In a week or so they broke in a bit and I had the dial up the treble. Gotta say, I'm enjoying them and wonder how they would perform on my other basses.
Chalk me up in the category of not knowing it was nylon over a round wound either. I find that amazing as they are the smoothest strings I've ever felt!

I've never thought about Tapes too much, but after reading this I'm pretty keen on trying some on my Fretless J
That's funny...I felt the exact same way about their flats. Never tried Labella tapes, but man, if the brightness of their tapes is even in the same ballpark as their flats, no way I could hang with them. Got no idea how they've succeeded in making thumpy strings so bright, but they certainly have.
I love the D'Addario tapewounds, and they were much brighter than I expected...
