I wonder if this is either a QC issue or if there was a spec change on those basses at some point.

Using the graphic that HaphAsSard kindly sent: if you see where the blue arrow is, that's where the tip of my pin sat on the top of the silk winding. There was no way of getting the pin in the hole, which still allowed the ball to sit where it should.
