to answer your questions, i'm using my zon vb4 with piccolo strings and a warm, spacy reverb effect. because the piccolo strings allow me to tune my bass to higher pitches, the chords are perhaps a bit more clear. with regard to tone, the sound is certainly in your fingers; however, the higher quality the instrument, pickups, etc..., the better your tone and sound will definitely be. personally, if i was able to, i would certainly make the investment...

landrybass, you are so right when mentioning the versatility of the bass. i feel so lucky to be a bass player at this time in the instrument's development. do you have manring's 'soliloquy'? it is a perfect example of just how versatile the bass is...
