I have recently gotten interested in bass tapping, but I don't really know where to start. Is there any instructional video out there or something that can help me with this technique or should I just start hitting my fingers on the fretboard with my plucking hand?

Victor wooten is a great place to start to learn tapping. His tapping stuff is generally not incredibly difficult and uses many patterns and ideas that you can easily apply to writing your own tapping lines

Stu Hamm's got an instructional video out on slap and tap.
There's also an instructional DVD by Japanese bassist Masaki (video sample) which has a lot of nice examples (not restricted to simply tap) but is in Japanese.
Also, Jeff Berlin put out an instructional video (back in the 80s I think?) where he covers some tapping.
You might find it worthwhile practicing scales with your right hand in the higher register and using all four fingers, or maybe playing bass lines you already know with your left hand and a melody with your right hand.
