Tascam Porta 03 circuit noise

I just bought a Tascam Porta 03 to get some old recordings off 4-track cassette... it is in really good condition and works fine but - with no tape in and controls all at zero and the transport idle - has a high amount of circuit noise/hiss especially through headphones... anyone else got one and can say if theirs is the same?
