So I bought a Dean bass it came with only a body, bridge, input, battery and a bridge ground. I installed a Taurus pre with dimarzio passives, it works with the pre in passive mode, turned the pre on and no sound, and a smell. The battery melted. I'm out of batteries right now to see if that was the issue but does any one have any thoughts on this?

This. Fortunately it wasn't a lithium battery!
Thirding "it's not the battery's fault" here. Check the circuit very carefully. Don't just hook up a fresh battery.
I rechecked continuity, it wasn't good. Always caffinate 1st, i wired a couple things backwards, I'll see what happens tomorrow..
