TB classifieds - twice bitten thrice shy

I completely and totally fail to see how you were screwed in any way with that one. ... Sucks that you didn't end up getting a bass you were hoping for, but it's not a "flaw" in TB's classifieds or in any notable percentage of TB'ers.

+1

nothing is binding until the deal is done.

I'd be batting about .990 if this were baseball, which aint too shabby indeed.

Overall I am exceptionally pleased to see bass players just being cool and helpful and not aholes.

all lowercase is less annoying than all UPPER CASE, i guess. if that's equivalent to shouting, maybe you can just imagine everything i say in a whisper voice. ;)

i make it a point to use proper case when typing someones name, so as not to be disrespectful to that person. otherwise, i'm just too lazy to hit the shift key.

thank you all for your feedback, both supportive and other. i see both sides of this situation and at the end of the day, i'm trying to feel good about giving the guy his bass back, as opposed to feeling bad for "losing my bass", if you will. the rant was more therapeutic than anything else.

have great days, everyone!

I have never had a bad experience with TB classifieds. I don't even bother with Ebay anymore for selling. Who needs the hassle.

The deal that went sour is really not the norm on here. As I am sure you are aware.

By letting the guy out of selling the bass in deal No. 3 you have actually contributed to what makes TB and TB classifieds great. Maybe consider it from that angle. You did the right thing. We all mess up once in awhile and I would like to think that your action is representative of how 99% of TBers would react in that situation. Good job.

I've had dozens of transactions via TB classifieds.

Only issues I've ever had:

-A bass being described as mint, which is clearly wasn't. I posted on TB about it asking what would be the proper thing to do (I don't really like asking people for money) and I ended up getting lambasted. I ended up selling the bass for what I paid for it and bought another one (I couldn't bring myself to play the original, it soured the bass for me)

-An amp being damaged in shipping during a trade. When I got it, it was semi-broken and the guy insured a $1000+ amp for $100 bucks. He offered to foot the repair bill, and he was a really nice guy all the way around. I'm still waiting on the repair guy to get back to me. I even left my wireless in the rack like an idiot and he told me about it and offered to buy it from me. (My friend sent it for me, but I should've checked anyways) Can't really complain about it other than I have to wait longer for the amp.

-Jaguar bass that was headed my way got lost in shipping. Totally not the seller's fault. We're still trying to resolve this thing with Fedex.

-Got a vintage P-bass on here with a bum neck. I talked to the seller and he told me to mail it back to him and his tech would replace the truss rod. Its currently being repaired. Again not the guys fault (I doubt he would've sold me a bass with a bum neck, he seemed like a nice guy and is doing the right thing about it) Only thing I could complain about is the inconvenience again, but not the seller.

So far, for the most part, my transactions have been great! Little snags suck but TBers are great people in my opinion and the majority of them really don't wanna screw you over.

What sticks in my craw are people who back out at the last possible second after saying they'll go through with the trade and you're just waiting to ship. In my last two trade threads its happened more times than I'd like to count. :hmm:

UPDATE:

the L-1000 deal ended up working out. dude called me and asked if i was still interested, i said yes. it is now hanging on my wall, and looking great while doing so.

i'm in the process of trading a dude out West a MM Sterling for my Jazz Deluxe. They are both in transit right now.

i guess what i learned is: don't let one douche bag named Pete Buchman sour me to doing business within this community. after all, most of the material "stuff" i could ever want is for sale in these classifieds!

3rd time: - not factored into the statistical analysis
this just happened today, so i'll not mention the guys name. was stoked to find a G&L L-1000 put up for sale yesterday morning. with uncharacteristically good luck, i was 1st in line and jumped on it right away. i've wanted one of these for years. i went through communication with the guy, questions were answered, contact information exchanged and i sent him the money yesterday afternoon, looking forward to receiving the bass by the end of next week. well, he called me up today and said he had a change of heart and would i consider accepting a refund. it was kind of awkward and it totally caught me off guard. as we were talking, i honestly felt bad for him and, should i ever find myself in the same situation, would want the same treatment, so i told him it was his decision and i'd live with it either way. he immediately refunded my money.

that last one i realize was kind of on me, since i had the option of straight up telling him "screw you, send me the bass", but that's just not what i'm about. i want it to be a mutually beneficial transaction, which in this case, it was not.

word of advice to all you would be sellers out there who have a closet classic or bedroom beauty: before you advertise it for sale, take it out and play it first! you may change your mind. that's what got me on #3: he took it out to play it "one last time" and got all sentimental.

I completely and totally fail to see how you were screwed in any way with that one. Once in a while, every one of us gets "buyer's remorse" or "seller's remorse". It's natural, if unfortunate. In this case you were both lucky enough that he got his seller's remorse before shipping the bass. How you feel about it is not "kind of" on you, it is completely on you. Sucks that you didn't end up getting a bass you were hoping for, but it's not a "flaw" in TB's classifieds or in any notable percentage of TB'ers.

I have to agree with bongo on that... disappointed? Sure.. and justifiably so.. but screwed because the guy backed out?

NO WAY..

Look stuff happens.. You would have been screwed had he not refunded the money to you..

If a seller gives a buyer an offer and the buyer accepts it, the seller cannot, by law, decide to not uphold his part of the deal.

Such a case would be thrown out of court, especially where the payment was refunded in full.. GUARANTEED... and the judge would be pissed off that the courts time was wasted...

The same with me.. and I was on the buyers end of number 3 once.. I wanted to buy a nice cab from a TBer I will leave nameless.. he even held the cab for me.. but I was having issues getting my PP funds transferred in time.. (It takes a few days to clear.) and then at the last minute my daughter's car went south.. and I couldn't say.. "Oh sorry honey.. I can't help you because I need to buy this second bass cab.. " .. That would have conflicted with the father in me.. and dad wins out over the bass player every time.. The seller was pissed .. and rightfully so.. but stuff happens.. he sold the cab and was happy... I think..

I have bought 3 items here.. and sold one.. and have yet to be disappointed.. as long as I got my money back I would not even sweat it. How can you miss what you never had?

I think you got stung by bad luck. I'm a noob here, but have already done a deal in the TB classifieds that was flawless. I've been on other forums for years and bought/sold/traded many guitars and amps without too many problems. Compared to Ebay, the classifieds are a safer bet. Usually you get like-minded people who are selling and don't want to get their reputations ruined over a bum deal.

A guy I know from another guitar forum had sold a guitar and had seller's remorse as the buyer was on his way over to complete the deal. Wouldn't you know that there was a little "accident" which put a big scratch in the back of the guitar just before the buyer arrived. Needless to say, the buyer backed out of the deal and the seller got to keep the guitar. IMO, this kind of situation is the exception.

At least you got the bass in the end.
