TB customs - reaching beyond the FAQs

TalkBass has a long and storied history where pretty much everything has been discussed at some point. We've compared pressure wound vs. half round, Zon vs. Alembic, dissected alder and mahogany, tens vs, fifteens, braided vs solid core and on and on. Setting all of that aside, I'd like to soak up the tribal knowledge/cultural norms of this society.

Yes, I've read those turn-of-the-century threads; good stuff.

We're not talking about common sense or shades of the user agreement but rather the things that make TB unique from the web in general. As an instance, I see only a few avatars like mine where it's a user's actual picture. Further, the word, "guitarist" seems to need some asterisks as though it's a swear.

Oh yeah, on that note, don't even get me started on that four-letter word for feces that starts with a P and rhymes with poop. I haven't used the P word since I was ten, So what's up with that and what else is particular to this place that a noob like myself ought to know in order to better fit in? Not trying to offend anyone, just trying to improve myself. Hopefully, some long-time users can give us a leg up.

Well then, Zen, you bear a slight resemblance to a man named Kieth so you got that going for you... which is nice. Someone accused me of looking like Paul Shaffer so I got that going for me ... which is meh. And, I guess I failed at colorizing my sig though it seemed like a straightforward affair; such a noob.

As someone who has served as a mod for several forums, I would say you need:
- respect for fellow members
- a sense of humor
- the ability to know when to ignore

This is because the word guitarist and ******** were used to create a portmanteau with negative connotations. Thus, gui**** was born. It has been prohibited to use that word in all its glory (or infamy) and is actually viewed as a swear of sorts here.

Even though it was a perfectly cromulent word.

I've only seen a couple of snide replies here with others jumping in to calm things right down. I've looked at a large number of threads before and since joining TB. I'm not here to bother anyone and so far, everyone has been real nice.

I've avoided several turbulent arguments simply by typing and deleting my thoughts before posting. Most folks round here are sensible, though, and those who aren't can easily be ignored.

I hope I handled @S-Bigbottom and his "catty" reply well enough. Thinner skin might have got huffy and posted GrampaSimsonTurnaround.jpg and rolled out (mic drop). In this case, saner heads were already on it.

So, starting my first TB thread and asking about the un-written rules seemed like a good idea at the time. If someone were to actually write them out, then they wouldn't be unwritten so there's that. Generally speaking (and without resorting to dru**** jokes) you can digest the content and parrot back what you've ingested but we're musicians and thus creative and capable of finding our own way.

My way is not going to be "P-bass with flats and a tort" because I don't care for pick guards. I do, however want to understand the norms without coming off as too high-minded. That said, I've got one monster of a split-coil bass that can run so passive that it doesn't even bother with a tone knob; dark and dank and deep as night. TBH, I like the Fender sound but not the feel of the ones I've picked up so far. I owned a Mustang for about 30 years. I can still visit it since I passed it down to my nephew.

Anyway, that's a summary of my bonafides. My curiosity persists so I'll keep on reading. One thing TB has done for me in a material sense is to start me down the stomp box path. I've been through about a dozen of them with nine of those still in play. As it is, Talk Bass is my new Facebook and you are my new family. Just getting to know ya!

No.

Best way to learn this site is to participate. It's like most....just better moderated. It's also full of some very knowledge people about gear, music, and band management.

I'd say you're in the clear. @S-Bigbottom is a pretty harmless dude and usually appeals to the humorous side in us. He's also well versed in electronics and amp repair, too!

This is more real than some would want to admit. I've seen folks get banned time and again because they couldn't follow even one of these three points.

Just kidding.....but I'm wondering why you changed your avatar from a pic of you to a walnut when in your original post you said you're one of the few people here that actually uses a picture of themselves.
