TB Engineers / Engineering students UNITE!

i got my bachelor of electrical engineering degree in '92 from ga tech, and as of last week :D :hyper: i'm pursuing a 2nd undergrad in computer science, with the intention of going to grad school for cs.

the graduate school advisor told me i probably could get into grad school with less than a full 2nd bachelor's, since all i've been doing for the past ~18 years is programming, but i think i'm going to pursue it anyway, just 'cuz heh.

Hah sure is. Most of it has the potential to be interesting, but that depends largely on the prof. And sometimes it's tough to explain to people why exactly I like this stuff. Will be nice to finish up with school and find a job, Alberta is pretty friendly to ChemE's :p

How long did you take between graduating with a BS and going for your masters? I'm thinking of doing that sometime down the road rather than directly after getting a BS

Yup. I majored in math and physics, went to grad school in physics, and then headed into industry. Today, I am doing optical and systems engineering, and managing a small team of engineers.

Times have changed a bit since I was a student. When I graduated from high school in 1982, the computer revolution had just begun, and it was still possible to be self-taught in areas such as programming and even electronics. I have done electronic design, software development, and embedded systems work.

Today, employers are looking for degrees in those fields. However, I have found that a physics background still gives me a niche, in being able to understand systems that bridge across multiple disciplines. Also, physicists tend to be a bit more "fresh" in math, even after they have been out of school for a while.

You could continue with physics. Another possibility is to take some of the essential engineering courses along with your physics major, then go to grad school in engineering.

4 years. If you can stand not making ChE income for an additional year, get your Masters ASAP. The amount of stuff you forget is tremendous. In addition, there is nothing like being on travel, working 12 hour days followed by staying up until 2 or 3 doing homework. Doing it immediately might help you in your Masters - I am doing mine all alone, which isn't so easy when it comes time to do homework.

BTW, props to the folks who are doing it the "hard way," i.e., after being out of school for a while. That deserves endless admiration. :bassist:

being 6 years out of highschool may not sound like a long time, but not doing a bit of math really hurt me. I started out taking a "not for credit" math class (math 40), then took college algebra. I never even opened the book in those classes. Now, I've been to two pre-calc classes this semester, and I've got to change my study habits. My brain really hurt after today's lesson.
 
I'm two years away from getting my Electrical Engineering degree. Funny thing is, this is my first year at a university; I just graduated from a community college with an Associate's in Audio Production Technologies, and over the summer just decided to go into electrical engineering.

wait til you get to real emag and antennas, and motors, and don't even peek ahead at signals and controls (loved those classes, but they were hardcore - mason's theorem to find roots for system stability ftw - and fourier transforms too - they're cool). of course transistor amplifier design was fun too.

This is what I will do if I ever get a second bachelors. This sounds like a great deal of fun.

I'm not sure if they still teach transistor amplifier design, but I hope to god they do.
