I'd like to see anything get built these days without electricity. Or CAD. ;)

Do they even teach hand drafting these days?


Anyway I'm an EE. I do electronics and transducer development work for a company that provides sub-seafloor acoustic imaging services. Kind of acoustic core sampling. I love my job. It's interesting and dynamic. I do spend a fair amount of time slogging through administrative stuff, but that's going to happen in any job.

My real love is audio electronics and eventually I'm hoping to strike out on my own down that road.

In my neck of the woods, yes. We had Engineering Graphics last year and we did stuff using ACAD as well as the ol' drafter and T square, etc. It was loads of fun.
 
Electronics Engineering grad here (class of 94).

I do a lot of work with lab test hardware and ATE equipment (see: circuit monkey), but spend most of my time designing high speed PCB's for memory, RF, and wireless applications (+10 ghz range).

Mechanical Drafting - Now that's REAL! Nothing hidden in the bits there, just WYSIWYG for sure! I still have all my stuff at home. One of these days I'll find someone to etch some lettering onto glass for me and put my compass set in a box behind glass "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY - BREAK GLASS" and hang it in my cubicle.

Not exactly "these days", but my very first engineering class in college ('97) was a drafting course. We spent an entire semester hand-drafting EVERYTHING. We got to AutoCAD in the last 2 weeks of the semester.

I still use those hand-drafting principles now when I'm showing the ME's what's wrong with their failed designs. :p

For the record, I've worked with some really, really great MEs. I'm currently considering a job with an aircraft instrumentation company that builds gyros (mmm... Gyros). I'll just say they are INSANE. Really, really cool mechanical stuff - mixed with equally cool electronics stuff.
 
yes, they do show hand drafting, mostly just to show the basic concepts. It is however handy when you're trying to describe to someone a part that you need built when you dont feel like CADing it.

"It needs to be about like this:" *scribbles on a whiteboard*
"What Dimensions?"
"Just make it fit."

Though that was only the first 1/2 of the term, then it switched to the lovely Nx5... I much prefer solidworks, especially for assemblies.
 
I earned a BSEE from Michigan Technological University in 1982. Acquired my PE License in (IIRC) 1987 and my iNARTE Product Safety Engineering certification when if was first offered about three or four years ago. I've been working in the product safety certification industry for 28 years.

Love of playing bass and music electronics led me to engineering school. I considered becoming an ME too and in hindsight kind of wish I pursued a dual degree.

Starting salaries are great, salary compression is a b*tch although I really can't complain.
 
MEng Microelectronic Systems, UMIST (Manchester, England) '94. Basically the BEng EE and BEng CS courses simultaneously with an extra year to finish up.

Been straddling the hardware/software fence for most of my career. Now doing performance modelling work for CPUs and GPUs.

CS can lead to cube jobs, but if you're good you can turn a cube job into a "work from home" job. I get to drink decent coffee, play with the cats, and practice bass while stuff's running. Sometimes even the odd mid-afternoon nap.

+1 to getting internships if you can. They're worth a lot of bonus points when it comes to getting your first job.
 
BSME 1995 Louisiana Tech University.

Licensed in LA and TX.

Been working most of my career in the offshore construction field. Most of the time the job is good. I get to play with big cranes, ships, structures and be a part of things most people don't know exist.

Right now I manage an engineering group of 9 engineers and 3 drafters. We support 5 construction ships.

Saturday I head to Bergen, Norway to scope out our next ship to make sure we can install two 4000m ROV system in the hangers.

In the end I want to free lance. Working for a company has gotten old. I have grown tired of the political crap.
 
BSEE from the University of Massachusetts, 1984. Worked making microwave diodes and learned semiconductor processing and mask design on the job. Left that job and skied for three years after which I landed a research job based around my semiconductor processing skills. This morphed into MEMS based sensor design and fabrication. I did this for a few years and left to take a job doing MEMS work for a company making laser projectors. Learned about lasers and optics on the job here. Left and went back to work for my previous company as the resident micro optics guy and developed the worlds smallest camera. This led to designing vision systems for various robots. While I had little to do with it one of the major projects to come out of the group I work with is featured in this video:



I've got a dozen or so US patents and greater number of European patents. It's been and continues to be a fun ride. My advice is to engineering students is

1. The goal of an engineering education isn't how to solve equations but rather how to approach and solve problems.

2. If you can get a job in research and development. You'll continue to learn on the job and won't have to deal with so much of the dreaded paper work.

Nice. I would love to get a patent just to say I have one. I have done a few things in my career that could have been patented, but the company I was working for did not want to pursue.
