I hadn't even heard of fanned fret basses until a few weeks ago. Then, people start posting threads with so many pictures of those beautiful basses that are so far out of my price range, and I want them all now.

On to the main reason I started this thread, does anyone know what some good quality, inexpensive 5-string bass guitars are? I've seen the Dingwall Combustion, which is about 1500 dollars, and there are some Ibanez basses for 1000 dollars, but those didn't get great reviews.

There is the Brice at Rondo for about $570. So-so reviews. Clearly for real fanned fret joy Dingwall is still the one.

I suppose so. The Dingwall basses sound absolutely amazing, so I'm fine with paying for the quality.

If you're 16, and if "still in school/too much homework" is the tallest barrier to your problem of affording one.. First off, I'm jealous of you - this is the best time to earn your own money and save for what you want. Secondly, get a part-time job and save.

You'll feel better doing it yourself, working hard for the things you want, even that dreadful anticipation of when it finally ships will be much, MUCH more appreciated when the UPS man stops at your house, knowing that you did it.. ALL.. BY.. YOURSELF.

Actually, you can obtain a credit card as early as age 18 - I did it. Start building a savings account and open a secured credit card when you can, then learn how to responsibly use it. Two years will pass way quickly. In the mean time, study up on money management and financial skills. It'll make your adult life so much easier. I wish I had when I was 16.

Keep @bdwgml 's advice close to mind.

I've seen quite a few good reviews about the Ibanez fanned-fret bass...in fact, based on some of those reviews I think I really have to try one out.

You should see how many carrots I've been eating since I've been on TB...


As for fanned frets - save up for a Dingwall, and you won't be disappointed. Even a Brice at $5xx is 1/3rd the way there. If you can afford the Brice, stick that money in savings.

As you're a teen, I presume living at home with no financial responsibilities? Ie any dollar you make can be put towards the bass fund? If so NOW is the time to "power save". Get a part time job - even mowing lawns, raking leaves, or shoveling snow - else, work at retail, etc. You can probably put aside $300/month and by the Spring you'll have a small boatload of cash saved up for your gear of choice.

If you wait till later in life, you'll probably be in a position where you work just to afford some bills and you'd have to work extra in order to save for a bass.

Don't think about a loan or credit card - save up month after month and that bass will mean a whole lot more to you! :)

Search online and TB for the Marcus Miller V7 by Sire. It was explicitly designed to offer tremendous quality at a very affordable price range. I believe you can get a new fiver for around $500.

I'm wondering what you are basing that statement on. How many of these basses have you played? The frets are perfect on these basses, and even though I bought one with the intention of upgrading the pickups, honestly, the stock pickups were very nice.

Given the choice between one of these or an entry level dingwall, I'd pick one of these, with the neck through being the deciding factor.

I'm all for teenagers working and buying their own "toys." But do you really need a Dingwall? For 99.9% of us a Mexican Fender or run-of-the-mill Ibanez works just fine. Enjoy being a teenager. Play in bands, go out with girls, hang with your friends. You'll see lots more cool basses in your life.

Just given the user's statement of being concerned that the more affordable basses won't be decent. He might buy a Brice and love it, or find he's unhappy with it. With Dingwall's reputation, I would think he would be less likely to be disappointed with one.

This is really a whole can of worms I don't want to open - didn't mean to put down the other brands. Chances are that a 16 year old who just heard about fanned frets a few weeks ago will move on to a new thing to want next month. Saving up for a big purchase allows the person to change what they are savings up for at any time. Buying something now on a credit card and then getting bored of it 2 weeks later is not the preferred way to acquire gear. My 2 cents.

Fair enough, but honestly I'm shocked at how nice the Defiant is.
