TC BQ500 Gig Review

A five pound amp is heavy now? My goodness.

:D While I agree that 5 lbs isn't heavy, I will also say that I was a little surprised at the heft of this lil bugger, given its size. It IS a dense little amp. I've had other class D amps that are more powerful and bigger in size, but similar and even lighter in total weight than the BQ500. It's not heavy, but it IS heavier than expected, given its competition.

When mine showed up from Sweetwater, I picked the box up off my front porch and immediately thought "did they send me some freebie cables or something?" because it was a bit heavier than I expected. (They didn't... just the requisite candy. Drat!)

I'm a little weary of amps that are too light. Sometimes I get fired up and the thing would go flying.
 
Just to add my own thoughts on this amp ...

I bought the Thrust BQ500 on a "lark" because of the low price, and I didn't have high hopes that it would be particularly powerful or sound great. After using it for several rehearsals and a gig, I've found it to be really powerful -- certainly the equivalent of other 500-ish watt amps I've owned from other manufacturers. And, I like the tone. I agree that the EQ center frequencies are not typical, but it's nice to have an amp that doesn't replicate the active tone controls on my bass (i.e. 40 Hz bass, 300/800 Hz mids and 4k Hz treble). Plus, the frequency response gets pretty interesting--and arguably more useful--when cutting EQ. I particularly like using the 10k Hz treble control as a LPF. (Sometimes I have to remind myself that tone controls work in both directions.)

ZERO problem with compression applied after EQ. It makes more sense to me to dial in my sound, then apply compression. This is no different to me than adjusting tone controls on my basses in front of a compressor pedal, which I do frequently. And it is nice to have compression built into the amp. (I have an Ashdown with compression too).

My input gain LED seems to respond as I would expect it to, changing as I turn up or down the gain control. I can't seem to replicate the OP's experience with this issue. Oh, almost forgot ... My passive / active switch is wired correctly, although I don't have a use for the active setting on this amp or any of the others I own or have owned.

When I was younger (a lot younger), the term "Thrust" might have evoked more of a reaction. Now I'm immune to marketing strategies. Maybe it means that when you find out how much you get for so little, you'll THRUST your hand in your pants to pull out your wallet and buy one. Anyway, lots of bang here for very few bucks!!
 
I'd say a 363w amp that keeps up with other's 500w amps is worthy of the Thrust moniker. It doesn't surprise me that this amp really performs for the 200 dollar price tag. TC has been very innovative for years now. My friend has been bragging about their pedals for a long time and Jeff Berlin likes their chorus over all others. I believe their compression targets un-musical frequencies better than others, allowing musical ones to sound louder to the human ear. Some higher rated amps (watts-wise) don't sound very good at all when they approach PEAK but it seems TC has figured out how to approach the peak in more musical fashion.

So, I did a gig on Friday at the lovely La Mesa Wine Works. A quick thank you to them. They are a great venue staffed with great folks.

In lieu of the usual gig report (it went well) I wanted to drop a review of TC's dirt-cheap BQ500 "Thrust" bass head, as I bought one as a backup and wanted to see how well (or poorly) it worked outside the bedroom, live and in front of people. The other two threads I could find on the amp weren't that helpful, and a lot of folks got wrapped around the axle with the "active/passive" switch issue and some other stuff that, while, really annoying, was not germane to the essential question of "is this a gig-worthy bass head or not?"

The answer to that question, by the way, is "yes".

The partial answer to the second question that everyone will ask is that, on my amplifier, the "active/passive" switch is wired properly and does the gain drop that you expect it to. I did say partial answer as there are some other issues surrounding the gain stage and I'll try to address them as best I can.

Pros:

$199.
Loud enough to bury a volume-crazed guitar player and a drummer who should use nunchaku instead of sticks.
Pretty simple to operate.
100-240V power, worldwide operation (literally all micro amps should be able to do this, most don't).

Cons:

Not 500 watts as you and I know the term.
Some really questionable build decisions.

The name. "Thrust". C'mon, guys.

Power: advertised as "500 WATTS PEAK!". Using the old radio guy's rule that RMS should be .707 of the peak power, using PEAK*.707=RMS gives me an RMS of 353W@4 ohms. 175-200W@8 ohms. I think that's reasonably close to reality. It stays clean forever, I could not get ANY dirt out of this amp one way or another. Since I don't do dirt, that was fine.

The "really questionable build decisions": First, a signal flow diagram...

Some of you will notice that not everything is where you'd think it should be.

Input: self-explanatory.

Gain LED: plugged in, cranked it, got a bit of light on peaks. OK, good. Turned it all the way down. Still lighting on peaks. Cranked it all the way up, still only lighting on peaks. Repeated with buddy's active Warwick. Mostly solid light on zero, half, and full gain. Only explanation: the circuit controlling the gain LED is BEFORE the Gain control. Which renders it quite useless. You'll have to do it by ear.

Gain control: Did it by ear. Can't make this amp clip the input stage with anything I have (my basses are all pretty low output). I ended up running it cranked up to about 3 o'clock on the knob. Did not try with the Warwick bass (we were in the middle of a gig!) This amp wants to be clean. Probably great with pedals.

Thrust LED: on when "thrust" compressor is on. Off when it is off. The "lights on triggering threshold" thing they talk about in the manual may have been their intent, but that's not how it works. More on "Thrust" later.

EQ: Works as expected, I don't like the EQ points. Bass is great. Low mids - too high (400HZ). Hi-mids also too high (1.6KHz)- really annoying. Treble - at 10KHz and up, this is literally a "hiss" control. I run it at about 10 o'clock. Just enough for some zing. I might add that this amp is one of the quietest micros I've ever run across.

"Thrust" control: again, the name! Try some class, TC.
With that complaint out of the way, this is an interesting knob. Because of where (so far as I can tell) the compressor is in the circuit, everything affects "thrust" and "thrust" affects everything. Change gain, it changes the compression (that's expected). Change EQ, it changes the compression, and that is NOT expected behavior at all. The good part is that you can get very different sounds out of this head with little experimentation. The bad news is that it's almost impossible to replicate those sounds, small movements with lots of compression make huge changes in the sound. The only way you're going to replicate sounds is just don't use the compressor at all.

CONCLUSIONS:

Suggestions for TC: ditch the Gain light and ditch (or put it pre-EQ) the "Thrust" compressor. A $199 no BS micro head that puts out enough power to legitimately gig with should have you guys owning the market, but you've made this amp too complicated and committed the unpardonable sin of giving rookie users an instruction manual that really does not bear much resemblance to the product that it was written for.

For me: It's a good amp. I may well keep it.
Measured mine as 40 volts RMS sine wave into 4 ohms using a signal generator to drive it - that works out at 400 watts RMS so not too bad! Impossible to make it clip - exactly what I want - clean bass down to 42hz! Brilliant little amp.
 
Old thread… waiting on mine, hoping for a good amount of clean and neutral sound for amplifying the signal from other preamps, as well as a usable 1-box unit for Rehersal or some gigs.
Also, the headphone amp/aux in.
I haven’t heard the “Thrust” compression circuit but I like the name cuz it just makes me think of Herbie :roflmao:

Just to add my own thoughts on this amp ...

I bought the Thrust BQ500 on a "lark" because of the low price, and I didn't have high hopes that it would be particularly powerful or sound great. After using it for several rehearsals and a gig, I've found it to be really powerful -- certainly the equivalent of other 500-ish watt amps I've owned from other manufacturers. And, I like the tone. I agree that the EQ center frequencies are not typical, but it's nice to have an amp that doesn't replicate the active tone controls on my bass (i.e. 40 Hz bass, 300/800 Hz mids and 4k Hz treble). Okay ... I sold my BQ500 some time ago, but at this price I've decided to jump back into the pool. I'm curious to see how it'll sound with my Trickfish 112m's and my GR Bass cabs. If nothing else, it'll be a great backup amp if one is ever needed.

OK, I've been using one on gigs for about nine months, so I'm ready to make a qualified comment.

First off, I bought it for a backup unit. My normal setup was a Carvin BX500 head into a BR210 cab + a B115 cab. At the max, we play around 300 seats outdoor and 150 seats indoor without instrument reinforcement (meaning, through the PA). The Carvin head has enough oomph to push both cabs to the fart level.

When the TC arrived, I packed it in my gig pack (a Samsonite laptop bag that carries my spare strings, tuners, pills, earplugs, tools, flashlights, etc., etc.) and loaded the Carvin head. I hadn't planned to use the TC but I figured I should burn it in so if there were a problem, I could send it back right away.

It took most of the first set to figure out the Thrust control and get gain and EQ settings to a place that sounded right. But once it was there, it was fine. We play pretty loud on stage and there's enough power to do the job without breaking up.

As a result, I've used it as the main amp on about 30-or-so gigs and not had one issue yet. The Carvin or one of the Peaveys goes along as the backup head. I'm ordering a second one to use as the backup head (they will both fit inside the Samsonite), so my life will get a lot easier.
 
I originally bought a BQ500 ~8 years ago to use as a rehearsal studio amp, and as a backup to my main Acoustic Image Focus head.

But for the past 10 months or so I've been using my BQ500 as my main amp for all gigs and rehearsals, and I gotta say, I am impressed. Clean, clear, loud, noiseless, gobs of headroom, usable EQ, usable DI, easy to carry, plus it's red... what's not to love?

I just wish I had waited to buy one until everyone was blowing them out for <$200!
