TC BQ500 Gig Review

So, I did a gig on Friday at the lovely La Mesa Wine Works. A quick thank you to them. They are a great venue staffed with great folks.

In lieu of the usual gig report (it went well) I wanted to drop a review of TC's dirt-cheap BQ500 "Thrust" bass head, as I bought one as a backup and wanted to see how well (or poorly) it worked outside the bedroom, live and in front of people. The other two threads I could find on the amp weren't that helpful, and a lot of folks got wrapped around the axle with the "active/passive" switch issue and some other stuff that, while, really annoying, was not germane to the essential question of "is this a gig-worthy bass head or not?"

The answer to that question, by the way, is "yes".

The partial answer to the second question that everyone will ask is that, on my amplifier, the "active/passive" switch is wired properly and does the gain drop that you expect it to. I did say partial answer as there are some other issues surrounding the gain stage and I'll try to address them as best I can.

Pros:

$199.
Loud enough to bury a volume-crazed guitar player and a drummer who should use nunchaku instead of sticks.
Pretty simple to operate.
100-240V power, worldwide operation (literally all micro amps should be able to do this, most don't).

Cons:

Not 500 watts as you and I know the term.
Some really questionable build decisions.
Heavy! This is a five-pound amp, my GK with double the power weighs far less. And is smaller.
The name. "Thrust". C'mon, guys.

EXPLANATIONS:

Power: advertised as "500 WATTS PEAK!". Using the old radio guy's rule that RMS should be .707 of the peak power, using PEAK*.707=RMS gives me an RMS of 353W@4 ohms. 175-200W@8 ohms. I think that's reasonably close to reality. It stays clean forever, I could not get ANY dirt out of this amp one way or another. Since I don't do dirt, that was fine.

The "really questionable build decisions": First, a signal flow diagram...

Some of you will notice that not everything is where you'd think it should be.

Input: self-explanatory.

Gain LED: plugged in, cranked it, got a bit of light on peaks. OK, good. Turned it all the way down. Still lighting on peaks. Cranked it all the way up, still only lighting on peaks. Repeated with buddy's active Warwick. Mostly solid light on zero, half, and full gain. Only explanation: the circuit controlling the gain LED is BEFORE the Gain control. Which renders it quite useless. You'll have to do it by ear.

Gain control: Did it by ear. Can't make this amp clip the input stage with anything I have (my basses are all pretty low output). I ended up running it cranked up to about 3 o'clock on the knob. Did not try with the Warwick bass (we were in the middle of a gig!) This amp wants to be clean. Probably great with pedals.

Thrust LED: on when "thrust" compressor is on. Off when it is off. The "lights on triggering threshold" thing they talk about in the manual may have been their intent, but that's not how it works. More on "Thrust" later.

EQ: Works as expected, I don't like the EQ points. Bass is great. Low mids - too high (400HZ). Hi-mids also too high (1.6KHz)- really annoying. Treble - at 10KHz and up, this is literally a "hiss" control. I run it at about 10 o'clock. Just enough for some zing. I might add that this amp is one of the quietest micros I've ever run across.

"Thrust" control: again, the name! Try some class, TC.
With that complaint out of the way, this is an interesting knob. Because of where (so far as I can tell) the compressor is in the circuit, everything affects "thrust" and "thrust" affects everything. Change gain, it changes the compression (that's expected). Change EQ, it changes the compression, and that is NOT expected behavior at all. The good part is that you can get very different sounds out of this head with little experimentation. The bad news is that it's almost impossible to replicate those sounds, small movements with lots of compression make huge changes in the sound. The only way you're going to replicate sounds is just don't use the compressor at all.

CONCLUSIONS:

Suggestions for TC: ditch the Gain light and ditch (or put it pre-EQ) the "Thrust" compressor. A $199 no BS micro head that puts out enough power to legitimately gig with should have you guys owning the market, but you've made this amp too complicated and committed the unpardonable sin of giving rookie users an instruction manual that really does not bear much resemblance to the product that it was written for.

For me: It's a good amp. I may well keep it.

Good and succinct review, thanks! I think applying compression after the EQ might be fun to experiment with. And while a 10 kHz “hi” center seems waaay up there, maybe by rolling it pretty much “off” the resulting slope could be useful for my midrangey taste in P-bass tone.

In short, your review makes me want to add one of these to my “try some micro heads” list.
 
I had my first gig with BQ500 a couple of weeks ago, and I had similar thoughts about this head.

The venue was semi-open with 200-300 people walking and eating around. I used 1 GK CX210 cab, and it sounded very nice and punchy to me. With a boomy stage I had to roll down the bass knob to around 11 o'clock, increase low mids at 1-2 o'clock, the rest was almost flat. It was no problems to keep up with 2 tube amp combos and a drummer + vocal in the PA.
I had the same struggle with the peak light though, but I found it sounds the best at noon to 3 o'clock. Seems like there is no use of that peak light anyway.
This head is definitely staying with me, at this price I can't find anything better here (in Taiwan). 100~240 volts power is a big advantage, as I ordered this amp from Thomann, but the power outlets here are 110V.
 
Soo glad I stumbled upon this thread. Thank you guys for the honest and down-to-ground review.
So silly of me to think that TC would, for once, use RMS or print the actual power on the box (not that 300W is insufficient). And I am glad that you are still able to gig with it, may it serve you well.

so how is this little amp holding up? I just ordered one to get a different flavor from my Quilter bb800, but I’m having second thoughts because of the wattage not being around an honest 300 watts @8 ohms 500 watts @ 4 ohms? Plan on running it with my Mark bass ninja 212 8ohm cab, not looking for big loud volume (piece cover band) but want to make sure it has some good note articulation down low and still dynamic enough at moderate volume. My GK mb200 sounds great but notes get lost as the volume goes up. Anyway just curious thanks!
 
I just ordered one of these to have as a lightweight backup and it's expected to ship from Musician's Friend in the end of January.
Maybe as they build more of these they will be revised and address some of the quirks of the circuitry.
OK, so I'm an optimist....

I've ordered one too. I also ordered the K210. I did want the K212, but them seem to stop supplying those 2 months back. Then the K210 didn't arrive at the shop, further delayed date also wasn't met, then a vague 'Maybe at the beginning of January' was given. Looking at shops around the world, I'm seeing the K210 as 'now not available', or 'out of stock'. So either TC is discontinuing it's K210 too, they have just failed to meet demand and a whole batch of K210s are coming. My hope is the latter and the the story is the same for the K212, and that's around the corner too.

So I have a head on it's way, and I need to think of a cab solution.

So far I’m liking this little amp, the Ninja 122 being 8ohm sounded like the amp was struggling into slight clipping when being pushed. Instead last night I used my to 2 small 112 440 Live cabs (basically like Markbass ny 112) It was then pushing a 4ohm load and had a much bigger robust tone without any amp clipping and was plenty loud. I liked the smaller footprint of the Ninja but the Bq500 just had the headroom at 4ohms that felt better!
 
I will also note that I find the gain a bit more sensitive then other amps I’ve owned (yes my passive active switch is wired in the proper orientation) I did switch from passive to active last night, in passive the gain was set around 8-9 o’clock and I was still getting some unwanted distortion on harder plucked notes. My Jazz pickups are pretty hot, Dimarzio model J’s. Once I switched to active I set the gain around 3 o’clock and the tone fattened up and was cleaner but still maintaining the Jazz growl..
 
I've had an update from Andertons, so it looks like both K212 and K210 are available, but TC are not making them available to every stockist.
Andertons says it's still expecting K212s but has no confirmed date from TC. They are no longer selling K210s

Thomann ship to Vietnam, Andertons doesn't. I get a 30Kg allowance and will have to travel really light in May if I'm to come back with a 23Kg + Packaging Cab

Originally I also wanted to buy K212 for my BQ500 and deliver it to Taiwan, but then Thomann asked my to pay additional 100 Euros for delivery (total delivery fee was 150 Euros) because it was too heavy for a regular shipment. I then picked GK CX210 and the delivery charge was just 50 Euros. They sound good together, good match, but unfortunately Thomann doesn't sell GK cabs anymore. I'm really curious to know whether Markbass Traveler 102P 4Ohm could be a good match for this amp, as it can push it with the full power. Has anyone tried these guys together?
 
I don't know why they ask from more I had an order agreed to the K210, allong with pedals, a sampler, some hardware, it would have made it bigger and heavier than the k212. Initially I had the Blackstar Silverline 50w on the order and they asked for extra in that case, but it went to the standard charge when I took the blackstar off.

I've since added the Blackstar back on as the k210 never came back in. and along with everything it was still a standard charge, even though they had to split the delivery. (DHL seem to temporarily miss place one of the parcels. So one arrived in Vietnam last week and the other I know left Germany, but no confirmation of being unpacked from the cntainer yet)

I'm really tempted to my my own cab. But I as the K series is almost out of stock in most countries world wide, I'm intrigued if TC are planning a new range to Launch at Namm this week.

Just bought a BQ500 here in Australia. Nothing else here in this price range comparable for this volume. Ampeg 350w for a lot more money? Nope.
I ignore all the anti-TC 236w crap. I've had an RH450 for 6 years and never had it above half power.
Blew the socks off an Eden 330w combo for volume so work that one out.
The BQ500 gain and volume controls sit very closely in the same positions as the RH450 ie. half up with gain about 2 o'clock just before it clips.
Only problem I have is that the active switch cuts volume by about 60% so I ignore it. Why not the same jack as the RH450?
And the OP review - 'Thrust'? Yuk. Compression (Spectracomp) on the RH450 is great but I leave 'thrust' off on on at a minimum.
Inexpensive, decent output, small and light, delivers the basics - best value around (may be different in the US where you're spoilt for choice).
