It's the importers who set the price. When importers bring stuff in they pay GST on the shipment. That adds 10% to the cost. Shipping is not cheap either. The equivalent merchandise sent to the US is cheaper to transport due to volume of goods sent. Warranty no doubt has to be also factored in as a risk/liability to the bottom line. I don't like it but it is getting better.
I buy my stuff from overseas and risk the item won't die on me. Last thing I bought was a RH750 for $900.00 landed. If I bought it here $1699.00. Took a punt and won!
Everyone in the delivery chain takes a cut bumping up the price of everything imported. Stuff that it made here is comparatively priced.
