TC Electronic BG250 cutting out, shutting off...

Folks,

I have an issue with my TC Electronic BG250-115 (older model) that I can't quite wrap my brain around. I'll power it on and it will function briefly, then the sound will start to cut out and it will shut itself off.

I can turn off the power at the switch, give it a couple of seconds, and power it back up. Sometimes it will cut out again almost immediately, and sometimes it will work fine for a few hours of playing.

I am aware of the thermistor issues that plague this particular amp - could this be the problem, or is this something new entirely? The thermistor I can probably replace if it's the issue, but I don't know enough about amp design to go much further in troubleshooting.

Any help you folks could provide would be greatly appreciated. I moved into a smallish apartment a couple of years back and got shed of my larger rig, so this BG250 is my primary and I just can't trust it at the moment, and at the same time really can't afford to just go buy another amp right now.

Mine just started cutting out the last two gigs, and I also want it as my primary because it's so convenient. But it won't be if I lose faith in the product. I'm sending my back to have it looked over. If I get any answers I'll tell you.

What did you find out? Mine is doing the same thing. It works fine at home, once on the gig under load it will cut out for a few seconds and come back on then repeat the cycle. The lights never go out and there is no distortion before or after. It is like an overload opens up momentarily.

Probably bad news or they would have come back.

I never figured anything out, at least no so far as what is causing the problem. From everything I have seen on the Internet this isn't exactly an isolated thing. It's frustrating, as I never, ever had the master above about 4 - 4.5 - I played in a largely acoustic group, always had PA support, and generally played smaller places so it just wasn't necessary to try to annihilate everyone with my onstage amp volume.

What I did figure out is that I'm highly unlikely to trust TC products going forward. Yes, I know it's somewhat unfounded, in that ANY manufacturer can produce a product or two prone to failure. I guess that as infrequently as I gigged this amp and no harder than I pushed it, I'm disinclined to take the chance on sinking cash into another potential TC failure.

I have since picked up a GK MB200 and Hartke HX112, and they're doing a fine job - the clarity is FAR better than the TC. I'll own that I miss the Toneprint compression a bit, but I'll pick up an outboard pedal if that becomes an issue.

That's exactly what I did with mine - installed a 1/4" input wired directly to the speaker. It's still way lighter than most standalone speaker cabinets.

How did you do this? Was it a complete disassembly of the cab?

I have to say I bought 3 amps from this guy and one was a TC electronic BG250 That has the cut out problem. I will look around,but its sad that a company does not jump on a problem like this. However I must say after owning about 6 recoring studios in 4 different states I have bought a lot of gear. Its a survival reflex. The best gear I bought outside of a Studer deck or a GML 8200 eq was a finalizer. Some people hate them but it helped me send out work cds with a hotter mix. it lasted 16 years running all the time before the screen died. Go TC electronoics if you still are alive.
