We're a few years down the road here. It does appear at this point that "avoided" was the correct word.

It sounds like something Tebow would do; I had to check the site to be sure. There is a town on Long Island called Babylon so it is even more plausible that a local paper would run stories on Mets Instructional League games. That said, the Babylon Bee had some pretty funny headlines.

I did something similar when I was in high school. We were playing our crosstown rival and the pitcher was a good friend of mine that I have caught dozens of games (including a no-hitter when we were 12) as we always played on the same team in the summers. He threw one right at my hip that I managed to jump out of the way. I took a couple steps to the mound and told him to calm down and not to jerk the ball but let it come out more freely as his fastball had a natural tail away from righties. I ended up maybe 1 for 4 or 1 for 3 with a walk that day so it was pretty much a draw; but we lost the game.

Teebs is coming to Scottsdale! Tim Tebow headed for biggest test yet: Arizona Fall League

I'm not a coreligionist of Tebow, nor would I agree with him politically (I am guessing), but I find him fascinating. My family and I had an odd close encounter with him, in a very significant place. In 2010, the summer before Tebow entered the NFL, we were on vacation in Italy. I had been to Rome several times previously, but had never been to the catacombs. We took the tourist bus to the outskirts of town and went to the Catacombs of St. Sebastian. When you enter the place, there is an area where you wait until they can assemble a large enough group that speaks the same language. In our group, there was a young man who looked like a college athlete, who was with a very attractive young woman (for the record, I saw no PDA's or anything untoward between them). Eventually, when we went down into the catacombs, I got a look at the guy, and started whispering to my family, "I think that's Tim Tebow!" When we got back to the surface, I did an internet search for Tebow images. If it wasn't him, it was his doppelgänger. (Why didn't I say anything to him? I never do in those circumstances -- I'm chicken****.)

I've always found "Hey, didn't you used to be famous?" to work perfectly in such situations. ;)

RH - In the few instances that I have been in the same spot - I tend to give celebrities some privacy. I was once in the same elevator as JFK Jr when we were both low-level municipal bureaucrats in New York City in the mid-80's. I was once in the same car repair/tire shop as Aerosmith's bassist Tom Hamilton just waiting for our cars. He didn't give off any "don't bother me vibes," but I refrained from bothering him, there was another person but I don't think they had the slightest clue who he was. Tom brought a book to read and I probably did the same. I did check with the shop's owner who confirmed it was him.

Re: Tebow. Now I'm 0 for 2 on predictions. I was surprised that he got a signing bonus especially one that is fairly large by baseball standards. Now I am surprised that the Mets are sending him to Arizona Fall League - that is usually for top prospects. If he doesn't start in high A next spring, that will be a waste of an AFL slot for the Mets, if he starts in AA next year, then the Tebow experiment would be a success.
