Tech-21 Bass Fly Rig v2 - First Impression

Up until this point I've been using a few pedals. Basically a tuner -> Ampeg Opto Comp -> Tech-21 YYZ -> MXR Deluxe Bass Chorus -> preamp (Ampeg SCR-DI, Mesa Subway, Tech-21 BDDI... depending on the gig). I did a critical evaluation of that setup, which I was happy with, and decided to try and shrink it down even smaller. My goal: be able to avoid an on-stage amp while still preserving the tone and feel I've become used to. After much research, I settled on the Tech-21 Bass Fly Rig v2. What sold me on the new version was the channel switching between the VT and BDDI circuitry and the addition of the effects loop. I giged an outdoor festival with the Fly Rig this past weekend and was completely satisfied with its performance! I now have the rig pictured, note the use of a battery powered power supply, can't say enough good things about the flexibility this brings!

What I like:
Sound guy was thrilled I just gave him a DI to FOH from the Fly rig. I have the YYZ in the Effects Loop. I generally go for a tube sound that breaks up a little when I lean into the strings. I use the compressor and chorus and found them to be very acceptable replacements for my original rig mentioned above. The Pedalboard with both pedals and the power supply is crazy light, seems there's nothing in the case when you pick it up! Love that, it will save my back and make my load-in and setup time negligible. The YYZ performs great in the effects loop. I prefer that box over the fuzz which is part of the Fly Rig. I love the simplicity. I'm not a knob fiddler I like to set my sound and forget it while playing.

What I have not warmed up to:
I realize that there are some players out there who will get use out of the filter and built in fuzz. I have no use for them to be honest and don't see me ever hitting the switch. I did play with them a bit but to me it is something that is not meat and potatoes. Those items could be added in the Effects loop and I would like to see it removed and have the preamp section run in parallel if desired rather than one or the other. this way you could use one channel clean and one dirty and mix them on the way out.

What did I accomplish:
I was able to remove four pedals and replace them with the Fly Rig. No cables running everywhere and one power chord to run the entire unit which means I should get hours out of a charged up power supply. Light, simple rig which allows me to just take it out of the case set it somewhere on stage and go.

What did I hear:
Compressor: Serviceable compressor which allows sustain and compression with one knob. I love compressors and what they give a Bass player. This is a very good and musical compressor.

Preamp: Well the best of both worlds... The VTDI and BDDI, you choose with the push of a button. The channel switching is a great idea but I do wish I could go between the BDDI and VTDI with a footswitch. For my selfish needs, that would be better since it could provide more tonal options. Unfortunately there is only one set of control knobs for the EQ section so really you can get a little more dirt of perhaps volume. No opportunity to change the tone or character between the two internal preamps is a little dissapointing. although I get it... this thing is really small and some sacrifice had to be made I'm sure. Overall, no real complaints though. Like I said, simplicity and "set and forget" works for me. :)

Chorus: Rich and musical says it all! Nice chorus which helps to thicken up the tone. No complaints... very simple to dial in.

Tuner: Love the tuner but I did find it was hard to see the display in the direct sunlight. It will be just fine indoors in normal light situations. Same can be said for the illuminated knobs. If I were the typ who did a lot of switching for each song, I can see where that might be problematic in the bright Sunlight. But again, will not be an issue indoors.

The Bottom Line:
If you have use for the features on the Fly Rig it can save you from having a complicated pedalboard and is much cheaper in the long run. It sounds great and as far as I'm concerned, Tech-21 has the basic tonal options most players are looking for. And if you need something else... well, thats what the effects loop is for! I'm thrilled with the switch!

I'm seriously thinking of getting one of these. I would never dream of playing without a compressor. I always need a tuner. You gotta have some tubey grit on tap. The other stuff is nice because you never know when you might have to (or just want to) bust out some gnarly fuzz or some MJ-style synth. I could run this into my nearly character-less Hartke 112 combo and have everything I need and not miss my big board at all.

This is the problem I was trying to solve with the Battalion + tuner, but this does it better and in one unit.

Franvarin,

I purchased the v.2 about a month ago and noticed a popping noise when I would push the "char" button on the second channel. It pops every time I press it, compared to a loose guitar cable in the input. I contacted the retailer and they happily sent me a new unit, which arrived today. Not only does that unit pop as well, but the input is VERY noisy when moving the cables around. I have read these are supposed to be quiet, but I have not had 2 which are almost unusable. To be sure it was not a power issue, I did plug it in to a power conditioner and the problem continues. Just curious if you have experienced the same or do you have a nice quiet unit. I love the tones I get out of this thing, so I am prepared to keep trying, but wanted to be sure this was not just a common issue I would have to deal with.

Appreciate any feedback you have!

The Character switch like all the other push button switches on the unit are not meant to be used like the footswitch functions. They are "set and forget" options that you choose before you start playing.

Regarding the input jack issue, it would be best to contact our customer support department so we can evaluate the pedal. The input and output jacks we use are spec'd to work with the industry standard Neutrik and Switchcraft cable dimensions. In most instances they should work properly with most cables though some import cables may be problematic.

Thank you for the response. I did send an email to info@tech21nyc and included a video to show what is happening with the character switch. I understand that it should be a set and forget option, but there are times when turning that character function off to take advantage of the EQ without getting the same presence is necessary, so I would think turning the option on and off should not produce a very audible noise. Hopefully you will have an opportunity to see my video to understand fully what is happening, I don't believe this noise is expected. Thanks again!

On my new FRV2 the char button makes the noisy popping sound as well.

As previously said, the Character switch is not meant to be used during a performance. It's a mechanical switch and will pop somewhat. If you're worried, turn off the SansAmp section before changing the switch.

Do you just mean cheap or low quality cables? Surely you’re not saying the US is the only country that can make usable cables?

It's more about the specifications of the cables. We use the Marshall style Cliff jacks. Cliff designs their products to work with the industry standard Switchcraft and Neutrik connectors. Not all cables use this standard. In the old days everything was made to these standards but no longer. It's a compatibility problem vs a quality problem. An oversized jack on an import cable can cause an input jack designed for a smaller specification to no longer work reliably. One of my pedals won't work with certain cables. It cuts out. A certain style XLR jack is difficult to use with one of my mixers.

That’s actually very useful to know - thank you.

I am in possession of the sh1 and I am seriously interested in buying the fly rig v2 .. in your opinion are they still different or does it make much sense to have both? Thanks a lot!
Well, I have the SH1 coming in shortly on a trade. I intend to use it along with the Fly Rig since it is strong mid focused. It'll give me an option to use the traditional BDDI in the fly rig or something more mid focused. It could be possible to stack the two preamps as well.

Also i would like to use sh1 together with fly rig v2 and i am sure they can be stacked together..my only doubt is that they are not too similar so there is a sense in having them both..thank you so much

I just picked up a new BFR V2 also.

I'm pretty happy with all of it, the octave, filter and fuzz are definitely the weakest link but there is to be an expected compromise with something this small.

I can get usable sounds with all the effects in the octa section, you do have to spend some time with it.

I got rid of my HX stomp as I just didn't use it enough and this little fly rig literally has everything I use as a bassist, very well impressed, however if a V3 gets released with seperate octave and filter controls I'd grab it in a heartbeat.

Just got mine (I already own an old PSA 1.1 and a VT Deluxe). For the moment, I love it (even the octafilter). But i am surprised by the way the fuzz works.
- Even with the knob “Q” set to zero, I hear the envelope filter working.
- when I let a string resonate, the sound is abruptly cut off, like a hard noise gate.
Have you noticed the same thing?
Thanks

So, it turns out I picked up the SH-1 and DP-3X. I find them completely different! Each has a unique tonal flavor and of course there is some overlap. I'm currently using the SH-1 in church every Sunday. I like it's straightforward simplicity.

I'm still using the Fly Rig V2 with the band I'm with. And my setup has not changed with one exception. The Rig now is housed in a rack drawer. Combined with wireless and IEMs it give me complete freedom and I don't have to worry about tripping over cords which is always a big plus.

As an addendum to my original post, I still see the need for independent channels on the sansamp part of the V2. It would be great to set one channel clean and the other with a different EQ section with some dirt and then be able to blend them or switch between them. As stated above by @tech21nyc the intent is not an "on demand" switching between the BDDI and VTDI circuit in the current unit. I would be happy if they removed the octaver and fuzz, maybe making room for the two channels to be switchable in real-time. But, that's just me... I'm sure other players would make a case that is just as valid to keep them. To me, those effects could be added to the effects loop if needed.

I really support your ideas about a second channel. Removing the Octaver and Fuzz makes sense to me as well. I rarely use those features.

That pop is normal. This is not a setting you would change during a gig.
