Tech 21 Bass XXL

I actually tried a search to see more comments about this pedal, but words under four letters (like XXL) can't be searched for.

A few good words in the distortion thread, but I'm hoping to hear more about this stompbox too.

I have the original, silver version and really like it. From what I've heard, it's really similar to the bass edition. Lots of gain and it reacts well to various playing styles. IMO, it's worth taking the plunge.

I just want to make sure I have this right, because I can't find one locally to try out. This is more of a heavy distortion than a fuzz box right?

I'm returning my MXR Blowtorch because it really is a fuzz pedal, and that's not what I'm looking for. I'm hoping the XXL would be more along the lines of what I'm after.

Sorry if this thread is a lil' bit old, but didn't want to start a new one just for this.

I was wondering, why does the XXL sound better with the BBDI? It functions like a booster or do you eq something or what?

Thanks in advance.

I think in part just because it compresses the sound a bit giving it more focus, but of course it also colors the tone with it's tube emulation.

Whatever the reason, that it an incredible combo for heavy distortion. A good number of fuzzes and distortions have sounded better going into the BDDI, but the XXLB benefits the most IMO. And while Tech 21 said that the VTBass would be like a XXL into a BDDI at higher gain settings, I didn't find that to be the case. The VT Bass is a great pedal in it's own right, but the XXL/BDDI combo rips faces like no other.

Come to find out that it's not a useful sound for me personally (just due to the gigs I play) but still a lot of fun to play around with.

@ TheBigO:

Thank you for the input.

Man, would love if I could try i out somewhere where I live, but no one sells Tech 21 stuff here. Seems as if it's going to be a blind pick on ebay :o.

Maybe someone could put some more soundsamples of it here?

I take it you've heard the BassTasters clips and the clips in the TalkBass Wiki already, right?

I don't know if this helps, but here's a sloppy clip I recorded when I was comparing the XXLB to the Rust Ride. The quality isn't great because I'm just using my field recorder and wasn't really planning on using it as a soundclip on TB, but here it is:
