Tech 21 GED 2112 Sansamp Demo + Thoughts

Thank god for this thread! I spent half a day googling this dilemma. I intend to run my 2112 (arrives wednesday) through my DB751 (which only has one channel). That jumper-mod info is going to be a lifesaver. Thank you DigitalMan.
Here's what I got from Tech 21...

Thank you. This pdf is pure gold. I want one blended output AND a bypass instead of mute (my tuner mutes, my head mutes... why would they think we'd want a mute on the 2112 over a bypass?). Maybe the "2113" will fix these issues :D
They keep harping on how this was built for Geddy, to his specifications. Just remember, when we make these jumper changes, they are within their rights to void our warranty.

I love Geddy to pieces. He is a supernatural phenomenon of talent: but he's not slugging it out in multiple bands dragging one rig to one show, and a completely different rig to another -- so his "specifications" might not fit the common man. The warranty-thing is just Tech 21 covering their butt, right? We've all, to some extent, modded our prized basses, so jumper settings are a cakewalk... if the GED 2112 should ever go teets up, can't we just reset the mod and pretend it never happened? (fwiw, I own an RBI, Bass Driver DI, and the VT. All are very solid. I don't anticipate warranty issues anyway). ...knock on wood!

I hear ya. I have decided to go with two RPM's and one GED 2112 running into a Crown 1002 power amp running in bridged mono, through an Ampeg Pro Neo 410. I have a second cab if needed. This is why I needed the GED to be configured like the RPM's (bypass switch and single output).

Yup. Same here: Aguilar 751 head running 2 Aguilar 1x12 cabs. I also have a Tone Hammer 500, and a 2x10 cab, but I have to mix and match: Sometimes I take the main rig. Sometimes it's the 751 with one cab. Or sometimes it's just the TH 500 with one cab. So in my current situation, the only way I could've made the GED work was to haul *all* my gear to every show—which would be no big deal if I were playing arenas every night and had a crew of Geddy's roadies.

Just to be super clear after reading all the posts.... Ill always be running a single 810 cab so there will be no signal splitting ect. If I plug into the front of the pre i can blend BOTH drive and deep without patch cables or moving the internal jumper? Or am I moving the internal jumper and be done with it?
Also which output is going into the front of my amp?

If you don't want signal splitting, you need to move the "TIE" jumper, or patch over to the effects return on the Drive section from the Deep section. (set to 50/50)
If you move the "TIE" jumper, the blended signal will come out of all four outputs. (Deep & Drive 1/4", and Deep & Drive XLR)
If you patch over to the Drive effects return from the Deep section, the blended signal will only come out of the Drive outputs (1/4" & XLR).

On a personal note (after some consideration), I think I will try the patch method. I say this because if you blend all the outputs, you will not have a single output volume control, but rather, you will have to adjust both Level 1&2 controls to adjust the output of the GED. If you patch, the Level 1 control will adjust the output of the blended signal. I need this to easily balance the output of the unit with my two RPMs which will have very different tones, and/or different basses plugged into them.

Of course... "Any opening of the GED 2112 case and changes to the jumpers must be done by a qualified technician or your warranty will be voided.'

That's a good point. In my case, I'm running (will be running) my GED into a rack parametric EQ which has an overall level knob. So I'm still thinking the "mod" method will be best in my specific case.

Any idea why a simple Y-adapter won't work? Why can't one just go out of both "Drive" and "Deep" using a Y-adapter into the amp-head? I read somewhere that that won't work, but I can't wrap my head around *why* it won't work.

...meanwhile, I'm staring out the window. UPS is on its way to me any minute now.

I can't give the technical explanation but I think it's something to do with phasing. Some guys have done it and it works for them. It is kind of a "down and dirty" method, but hey... ;)

I got it. Did the mod. It took less than 10 seconds. The GED sounds fantastic.

That is true. Whatever the active input happens to be, it feeds both preamp sections.

You can also easily move a jumper to have the outputs be summed instead of independent. It doesn’t have to be done by a qualified tech. The manual shows exactly how to do this.
Hey man! Can you tell me, where in the manual does it show the jumper mod? Much appreciated!

Sorry, my bad on that statement. I had a separate doc at the time.

In any case, there is a jumper you access by taking the bottom panel off. It has the word “tie” below it. When the jumper is connecting the middle and right pins the outputs are tied together. The word tie is offset to make it somewhat intuitive. Pic attached. In the pic, the outputs are NOT tied together.

Hey All,

Got mine today, did the mod before I even turned it on. So amazing. Been years since I used any Sansamp products except a GT2. I've wasted so much time.

Couldn't be happier with the sound and went on a Geddy binge unintentionally. Will be playing mines through 2 Blackstar 115s.

Whilst I am currently re-learning all the Rush classics. Will be using as a Blues and Blues/Rock setup.

So many amazing tones in this box. One of my best purchases ever.

Was just in the process of buying one myself. While I have the option of using the 2 channel amp and separate cabs or using a single rig I have situations and gigs where being able to do one or the other is priceless. Thank you to all the contributors on here that dug into this and save others like me time which is at a premium lately for me. I haven’t even looked at the unit yet, but can already visualize the mods.

I’m going to experiment with different cab setups in the dual amp/cabinet mode including combination 10’s, (2 x 10” or 4 x 10”) 12’s, single or dual 15’s, and even 18 inch. I’m curious if any of you who have used this setup have any input on this and if any certain combo compliments the 2112?

Hi, Mike! I just bought new speaker cables, so I'm finally going to get to hear how the 2112 sounds.:hyper::bassist:

I'll be running it through a Crest CA9 stereo power amp; "Deep" channel into one channel of the Crest, "Drive" channel into the other channel of the Crest.

I'll be using my Mesa PH212 cabinets; one for the "Deep", the other for the "Drive". I'm also going to try my Bergantino HT210 and HT115 cabinets, and maybe just for giggles, I'll run all 4 cabinets, - just to see if the neighbors will call the Cops on me! :D

I'll post back on my thoughts. It might be a day or so, though. I have a "Honey-Do" list from Hades. (Hey, "By-Tor and the Snow-Dog" reference! :D )

I'm especially excited to try the 2112 because I've never ran a separate "Clean" and "Dirty" setup.

TTYS!
