Tech 21 GED 2112 Sansamp Demo + Thoughts

I'm especially excited to try the 2112 because I've never ran a separate "Clean" and "Dirty" setup.

Well, I didn't get a chance to hook everything up; I had to go back to work earlier than I expected due to a scheduling snafu with another driver.:meh:

But rest assured, I'll be firing this bad-boy up when I get back home! I will post back when I do.

Hey Arthur, Yeah, I’ll look forward to that. If the P bass in your bio pic is the same one you are going to run through it, we even use the same bass. My P Bass is a “74” original Lake Placid blue one and is a rare one that actually has a factory installed Jazz neck on it with the white binding. Back in “74” few bassists realized it, but you could special order a P bass that way although it took a long time to finally get it. I modded the pickup to some Duncan quarter pounders, a Hipshot Kickass bridge and a Kellingsound wiring harness. (Still have all the original stuff). I’ll let you know as well how my cab experiments go too.

Actually, the avatar picture is the late, great John Wetton, one of my biggest heroes, but I am a huge P-Bass fan! I'll definitely plug my P-Bass in, it's an '02 or '03 American Standard model, with a Nordstrand NP4 pickup, which is a really nice sounding vintage-style pickup.

Hey there,
What a great thread! I am currently awaiting this pre and stumbled across this thread. I’m running your basic config so I’ll do the Tie mod for sure.

Quick question: I do have a pedal board I use (for just a couple of effects on select tunes. Some delay, Mutron, blah X3)
I use the send/receive to place it on my current amp. I assume(grr, there’s that word again!) I should use send/receive on the pre now as the output from the pre will hit the return on my amp?

Everyone still happy with their choice using the 2112? I think I can almost hear the UPS guy around the corner...

I have some extended time off planned before this Christmas and through New Year's. I have all the necessary cables, and I most definitely will be trying it out, into my Crest CA9 and Powerhouse 212 cabinets. I've also bought additional speakon speaker cables to add my Bergantino cabinets to the mix.

Think: "Back to the Future" the scene where Marty plugs his guitar into the mammoth speaker at Doc Brown's lab. :woot: :bassist:

Geddy was one of my biggest influences on bass when I was a young guy, but I'm not trying to duplicate his sound with my GED-2112. I'm hoping I can get the sound I have in my head, running separate deep, clean-ish lows through one channel and crunchy mids through another channel of my stereo power amp, running separate speaker cabinets.

Hopefully this experiment pans out for me. I do have a good hunch that it will.

I’m thinking about using the Eden Stack in my avatar and adding another WT 400 with it , or maybe just using the Hartke next to it . I also have a couple of neo cab set ups to experiment with. I’m with you on “ That “ sound. I’m going for a Geddy meets Geezer sound that I can “picture “ in my head .

I've finally hooked mine up, and it's my first time running separate clean and dirty signals simultaneously. I'm just scratching the surface, but I can already tell this is going to be fantastic when I start playing live with my band.


When I stumble across some memorable settings I'll post them here.

FWIW, my main bass is a 6-string with Bartolini deep tone quad coil pickups with an onboard Aguilar OBP-3 preamp, which I run pretty much flat, other than a tiny boost to my mids and I ever-so-slightly favor my bridge pickup. This bass is strung with GHS Pressurewounds, and my tonal goal with it is a thick low end, with boosted low mids, slightly boosted mids, and just enough high end for definition. As I previously posted, I'd say my sound has been greatly influenced by Jack Bruce, JPJ, and John Wetton.

If i were to connect both outputs from the GED to a Crown XLi 1500 (or a similar power amp) running in mono bridge mode, could I get both the Drive and Deep sections running through a single cab?

I've never run an amp in mono bridge mode, so I might be incorrect on this, but I don't think so - I think that would be the equivalent of trying to get both channels with a Y-connector.

The way to do it would be to either flip the internal jumper on the GED-2112 so that both outputs get blended - then take either output of the GED and put it into your power amp.

Alternatively you can blend both outputs on the GED with an external 1/4" patch cable (the method I use since I don't otherwise use the effects loop and typically run both channels to separate amps/cabs) - run the "Deep" output into the "Effects Return" with the "50/50" switch engaged and use the output of the "Drive" channel as your main out. Master Volume is now the output level of the "Drive" channel and the output level of the "Deep" channel functions as a blend of the two channels.

I have been using the Radial Mix-Blender to combine the two 1/4" output signals from the Ged-2112 for a single amp and cabinet instead of changing the jumper. Do you think I lose tone with this? I use the effects loop of the Mix-Blender for a couple pedals as well. You can control the level of each input signal (Deep and Drive) from the pedal as well.
This does what the Ged-2112 should have done with the push of a button (or with a minor operation to switch the jumper.)...to combine the two preamps to one output.

Before the Ged-2112 came out, I was using an Avalon U5 and a Tech 21 RPM. These two preamps are essentially what the Ged-2112 are mimicking. The Drive section of the Ged-2112 is the RPM and the Deep section is the Avalon U5. When using this with a single power amp and cabinet, I had to use an Axess electronics BS-2, which is essentially the opposite of a Radial Mix Blender (one input and two outputs as opposed to two inputs and one output...and another Rush toy), to allow me to plug one bass into both preamps (Axess BS-2) and output those two preamps into one signal (the Radial Mix-Blender) for one power amp and cabinet.

The Drive section is the RPM. The Deep channel was not voiced to replace the Avalon. The Deep Channel was voiced to Geddy's specs. They were always experimenting with different gear and he had stopped using the Avalon before he worked with us on his signature preamp.
