Tech 21 SansAmp?

Hey Guys,

I want to get a real punk/punchy bass tone and I heard about this Sansamp gadget and i really want to see if this buddy will help.

Will it?

P Bass + SansAmp will get you a great punchy tone. The SansAmp can emulate the tube sound of the bigger brother Ampeg heads to yours. Should match up nicely.

Before the search police come and arrest you, here's a clip I made of P-Bass -> Sansamp recorded direct via the XLR output. I was going after a bright distorted tone here, but it's capable of more mellow sounds too. I borrowed this from a friend and really liked it, but not sure whether to get this, the Hartke Bass Attack, Aguilar Tone Hammer, Tech21 VT Bass, or Tronographic Rusty Box. So check those out too, especially the Hartke as it's really cheap and apparently sounds similar to the Sansamp.

I have the Hartke, have had it for two years now actually, and I really wouldn't say it's too similar to the sansamp stuff. If anything, it is closest to the PDDI.

You might want to consider the new Sansamp VT Bass (part of their "Character series"). I just got mine the other day (from John at wymoreguitars.com, great guy), and I really love it. I've owned a couple BDDI's, and I think the VT Bass sounds a little more neutral in the mids than the BDDI's. It's very versatile, and would give you the tone that you're after.

Actually, what you already have gear-wise should work for that sort of tone.

Boost your high mids, and if you're not already using roundwound strings, start exploring them.

Also, a LOT of punk uses pickstyle playing. It's something to keep in mind, if you're not using a pick.

I'm not sure I'd call the Sansamp punchy. The mid scoop can hurt your mid presence and make it tougher to cut through. Just my opinion, so save your nasty comments if you're a sansamp advocate. I tried an EBS Valvedrive and I liked that better for a little extra punch.

I heard some samples of the Tech21 VT bass from namm and I was not impressed at all. I am eager to try an Aguilar Tonehammer when it comes out.
