Tech 21 Steve Harris Fly Rig

I know I wasn't the poster you directed this at, but I ran the YYZ in front of the SH-1. I am now running the SH-1 in front of a Tech 21 Bass DI (V1). The SH-1 has a tuner so I don't need a separate pedal for that and the Bass DI has an XLR out which the YYZ does not. Maybe I should try putting the SH-1 in front of the YYZ.....
Interesting! Do you disable the cabsim on the SH-1 when you use it with Bass DI? Are you using the SH-1 for dirt and the Bass DI for clean sounds? It seems like stacking cabsims would not be optimal.

In my setup, I need an XLR out and amp out on the last pedal in the chain.

I go back and forth on the cab sims engaged or not. I am sort of using the setup almost backwards from how you describe. I have the "bite" on the SH-1 engaged but I have the gain backed way off to around 9 o'clock. Most other EQ controls are at around noon, blend is around noon also. A bit of drive but more clean than anything. On the Bass DI most EQ controls are around noon and the drive is around noon or 1. The Bass DI is last in my chain because I wanted the XLR out. I put it last instead of the SH-1 because I didn't really like the YYZ in front of the SH-1 so I assumed it would be the same case with the Bass DI.

Thanks for the interesting discussion all. I had never considered running my SH-1 with my Tone Hammer DI…. but stack ‘em if you got ‘em, right? Since I acquired the SH-1, I’ve been using the THDI on low volume acoustic gigs. But since you all have been trying other arrangements, I’ll contribute to the conversation.

The THDI has potentially solved a problem with how I like to setup my live sound with my 3 piece rock band. My issue with the SH-1 was having to choose a clean tone that either featured the bite switch or not. The settings are so different I wasn’t able to change on the fly.

The solution: I can use the THDI with AGS engaged for the low gain, saturated, mostly clean sound and the SH-1 with bite switch to add punch to the clean sound and as much drive as I want on the second channel. Plus the tuner. I put the THDI at the end and run outs to the board and my amp.

It sounds good at home. I’ll try it with the band next week.

Well, my SH-1 arrived today and I will take it, and my YYZ shapeshifter to rehearsal tonight to mess around with. I really love the tones I get out of the YYZ (maybe its my J bass), and I can not emphasize that enough. I also don't think it is too hard to adjust tones on the fly if I limit my self to drive and mix knobs.

But looking forward to running the presents on the SH-1 and seeing how things sound.

A couple of questions:

1. How are y'all using the second channel? None of the presets in the owners manual include any suggestions on what channel 2 might look/sound like. It take it the change in channel sound is as subtle or dramatic as however the gain is adjusted? Maybe more like a boost/or shift?

2. For those of ya'll not using one of the presents in the users manual -- what kind of settings are use using (for your cleaner type sound or maybe some funk)? I realize I am gonna have to play with it, but looking for some of y'alls tried and true-- "this is my sound" to try out tonight.

Thanks,

Thanks,
This was my favorite SH setting. Not clean though. I asked Tim about it and I believe he said it was based on the Genesis setting with some tweaks. He posted a pic for me but I no longer have it but it may be earlier in this thread.

The way I understand the 2nd channel is it uses the eq settings of the 1st channel but you can adjust the volume and gain. As you say, a boost. That's how I use it.

I use the Stever Harris settings and tweak from there. The SH setting has the blend at 100%. I go about 50%. I also roll off some of the highs as they can be a bit much depending on your bass, the amp you are using, and other effects you might have running.

I love the sound of the Genesis and Lemmy settings but they are too extreme for most bands.

I will have to check my settings when I rebuild my pedalboard this weekend, but I think I'm also using the Steve Harris settings, just modified with the blend back to 80%, treble turned down to 10 o'clock, plus lower gain (since I'm using active Spectors). The second channel is used for heavier gain. I love feeding my MBD1 into it for gnarly tones. The SH1 is my primary tone shaper going both to the board live and feeding my amp on stage (I'm using a Mesa WD800 with the eq settings pretty much flat unless I need to tweak them for each stage/room).

Thanks for the ideas, I have a "Battle of the Bands" gig on Saturday, and after testing the SH-1 (and the YYZ Shapeshifter) out at rehearsal, I am am going to use the Geezer setting on the SH-1, with the lows turned up to 1:30 for the blues jams, and use the same settings on channel 2 w/ the gain turned down 9:30 for a reggae track.

If interested, I am using the YYZ w/ the Geddy setting and the highs turned down to one for a couple other blues jams. I also ran the YYZ into the SH-1 (with Geezer settings) at rehearsal, it sounded pretty good. But I am not sure I am ready to try it at this gig.

I'm regurgitating this thread just to say that I got one and I shouldn't have waited. I wanted one 3.5 years ago when I put my board together and dabbled in more esoteric EQ (Q\Strip and SA ZIO) until finally relenting to 'traditional' eq and man, what a waste of time. Don't get me wrong, both the q strip and ZIO are nice pedals, but the SH1 had what I was looking for all along. The EQ points are on point, the channel switching is optimal (having loved but been frustrated with the GK MB800 which is similar in design but much less straightforward), the integrated gain is better than 95% of OD pedals I've tried, and it's sturdy.
Side note though which i'm sure is mentioned elsewhere, but the speaker sim + bite really add some volume to the output. Reminds me of th +10db button on my q strip.

Hi all!

Just wondering if the SH1 will fit my needs.

My setup is basic. Jazz with flats, playing Eagles tunes (Sorry, Dude).

My current amp has a very flat response, just how I like it. I may tweak a bit for the room, etc. I'll push the pre a bit to get a little bit of a glow, and off it goes into my 2x12. DI from the amp goes to FOH, and - by extension - my IEMS.

I want to start using a DI for a couple of reasons - insurance against amp failure, and - if possible - get a bit of cab sim rolloff into FOH and my IEMs.

I'm aware that Sansamp SBDDI and Para have a baked in EQ curve, which is quite scoopy and not really my thing.

My question(s):

Is the SH1 flatter, more along the lines of the VTBass..? Does it sound like it would fit the bill for my needs?

Thanks, everyone.

I was ready to tell you the SH-1 sounds like it could be just the thing you need. But I am in no position to say whether or not it is flatter that the other pre-amps with a baked in eq curve. I think the SH-1 eq is very sensitive and I have been able to get whatever I want with it, including solid flabba holt reggae tone, in which I use a Jazz with Flats.

I mostly use it ampless these days, but it sounds great through my Rumble 500c and my Mesa 800-d w/ Mesa 115, as well as the small variety of back lines I have used.

IME the SH1 is inherently pretty flat with the bite and speaker sim switches disengaged. Bite provides aggressive top end, speaker sim rolls off highs and provides a low end boost. I like using both switches together: the end result is not flat, but it does fit my tone goal, which is not flat!
