Tech 21 Steve Harris Fly Rig

I've been on a dUg jag for awhile so I brought out my SH-1 and ran a passive P-style bass thru it. It's just as I remember it. To me, Bite can be mitigated easily enough by rolling treble back... but I mainly play P-style basses and to my ears Bite works beautifully with them (along with speaker sim to fill out the lows), so maybe treble cut won't work for others (shrug).

So, I turned off Bite and the speaker sim... did some tweaking, and got a nice range of tones that way too, including bright/aggressive ones.

Again, frame of reference is that I'm a dUg or Darkglass kind of guy for rock, but to me the SH-1 is one of my more neutral pedals, especially with Bite and speaker sim off.

P.S. Bears repeating that the SH-1 EQ is clever: the EQ is post-overdrive EXCEPT for the "mid mid" control, Mid 2. So, you can boost Mid 2 to increase distortion, focusing it on that frequency (cutting Mid 2 will also cut overall distortion level). The nice thing for me is being able to boost Low or Mid 1 (low mids) without getting farty low end distortion. Distorted lows are great if you want that Jack Bruce thing... but I prefer the Steve Harris thing.

Hi all, sorry to revive this thread!

I'm looking for a nice preamp/cab sim for a straight to d.i. IEM setup for a funk and soul functions band. I know that's not the primary genre of this pedal, but some of the clean settings on demos sound really nice, and the added tuner means this would be a one pedal solution for my gigs.

Been going straight to d.i., but really don't like how sterile it sounds in ears.

Would this give a nice, fat, amp-like feel do you think?

Thanks!

The "Maiden connotation" is appropriate but also unfortunate because the pedal is so versatile. Fat tube tone can be dialed in. I would start with Bite disengaged and speaker sim engaged.

I think it could work great for that sort of tone with the Bite disabled. In some ways I found the EQ points better to my ears for fatter tones than the aggressive high-mid tones as both mid controls are too low for my tastes and the Bite switch was too much of a good thing. I found the lightly driven tones pretty convincingly amp-like too. If you can try it out I'd say give it a shot. Kinda surprised they haven't made anything similar to this using the VT Bass platform (multiple tone channels and a tuner), as I'd think that would be perfect for alot of folks (the closest they have that I'm aware of is the Bass Flyrig)

One thing Tech21 has going for them is good demos of their products. Their approach to achieving signature sounds is different across the line. I’m thinking of Geddy, Doug Pinnick, Steve Harris, and VT Bass. All different circuits with different goals. Pick your flavor(s).

And I agree about the Bass Fly Rig providing a similar range of sounds as the SH-1, just with a different take on the underlying amp and cab emulation.

Bumping this thread in search of a Jazz Bass player using the SH1 for the Maiden tone it was designed for and for other stuff. I like 70's Dusty Hill, Funk, and Reggae. I am looking for a versatile pedal.

Got money burning a hole in my pocket and I cant decide between the the SH1 and the YYZ shapeshifter. I probably just need to pull the trigger and live with the results.

Solo the neck pickup and turn it up. Works well enough for the Steve settings.

So for the "making the J sound close to a P" with the neck pickup solo'd it does the trick. I assume you like the SH-1 for whatever else you do with that J that involves the bridge pick up?

And -- out of curiosity -- where are you in central, Washington? I am just across the border on the Idaho side.

I generally favor the neck pickup but I like the bark from the bridge on specific tunes. The SH-1 is full of good sounds but it can take significant tweaking to get from one to another. For example, the Steve Harris and Phil Lynott settings, which are two of my favorites. Those two are different enough (bite switch on and off) that gain and level settings make it impractical to switch during a gig.

But yeah, if you want a burpy, barky j-tone I’m sure you could dial it in.

Moscow is a great town. I’m in Eburg.

I have both. The SH1 has been on my board since I purchased it back when it first came out. I bought the YYZ a year or so ago. It is not on my board currently. I find its drive a bit too "fizzy." I thought I liked it, thought I found a sound I liked, but now I am meh about it. IMO, the SH1 is far more versatile. I start with the Steve Harris setting and tweak from there.

I appreciate the feedback. I pulled the trigger on the YYZ Shapeshifter over the weekend and will do the same on the SH-1 in another month or two once I save up some additional cash. I spent a whole day "researching" trying to decide which to get and, in the end, decided to just get them both and decide from there. I live a very long way where I can test either of these before I buy.

Those will be the only pedals I have. If I like them both (and together) I am not opposed to keeping both if I use them. I looked into a Sansamp BDDI, and I am hoping the SH-1 will fulfill that requirement.

To my surprise my current side project (Blues oriented) is started to get some gigs bigger than the local coffee house, including a couple of local outdoor festival things. Looking for some new toys that will enhance my sound and make my set up easier; but they also need to be fun in my main (studio) jam that is all over the joint from afro-pop to metal.

I’ve mentioned this in the past and it covers multiple genres of music. I use it in my wedding band which covers 50’s till modern music and it does a great job.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Are you running the YYZ in front of the SH-1 or?? The YYZ is the other Tech21 pedal I’m most interested in trying.

I know I wasn't the poster you directed this at, but I ran the YYZ in front of the SH-1. I am now running the SH-1 in front of a Tech 21 Bass DI (V1). The SH-1 has a tuner so I don't need a separate pedal for that and the Bass DI has an XLR out which the YYZ does not. Maybe I should try putting the SH-1 in front of the YYZ.....
