I've been on a dUg jag for awhile so I brought out my SH-1 and ran a passive P-style bass thru it. It's just as I remember it. To me, Bite can be mitigated easily enough by rolling treble back... but I mainly play P-style basses and to my ears Bite works beautifully with them (along with speaker sim to fill out the lows), so maybe treble cut won't work for others (shrug).
So, I turned off Bite and the speaker sim... did some tweaking, and got a nice range of tones that way too, including bright/aggressive ones.
Again, frame of reference is that I'm a dUg or Darkglass kind of guy for rock, but to me the SH-1 is one of my more neutral pedals, especially with Bite and speaker sim off.
P.S. Bears repeating that the SH-1 EQ is clever: the EQ is post-overdrive EXCEPT for the "mid mid" control, Mid 2. So, you can boost Mid 2 to increase distortion, focusing it on that frequency (cutting Mid 2 will also cut overall distortion level). The nice thing for me is being able to boost Low or Mid 1 (low mids) without getting farty low end distortion. Distorted lows are great if you want that Jack Bruce thing... but I prefer the Steve Harris thing.
