Tech Support Needed - Windows intermittently recognizes USB mouse

I've had this problem from quite some time, but not it has been becoming more and more frequent. Periodically my optical usb mouse stops working and a message titled "usb device not recognized" pops up. Ironically, the message asks me to click "here" to fix the problem. Too bad I can't. I went through the USB and Mouse trouble shooter, installed new drivers, and checked the XP hardware compatibility list and nothing can save me.

My PS2 mouse worked the last time I checked, and the same problem exists on multiple ports. I think I just need to buy a new mouse, but I'm a bit of a cheapskate.

Yeah, sorry when I said to try a different mouse, i did mean a different mouse of the same type. Forgot to mention that. A USB mouse can cost as little as £6. I use cheap Trust products on my PC and they work just great.
