Techniques for palm muting?

I like the sound of muting with the palm and plucking the string with the thumb. But I can't play fluid lines and faster runs like that.
More and more guys seem to know how to do it. Damien Erskine and Uriah Duffy are some of the people who I have found but I know there's lots of others.
There are techniques where guys use the index and middle fingers as well as the thumb to create some really interesting patterns.
I've been searching on youtube but i have not found anything that breaks it down starting in a simple and slow way so that I can try to replicate that style.
I'd really like to learn how to play like that!
Can you guys give me some pointers and post some links?
Thanks

Try using an alternate thumb picking techique. IE use the pad side of the thumb and then the nail side.
Another method would be to rake and play arpeggios or something. If you did that you could probably do that.
Remember, nothing you do is 'wrong'. If you come up with your own method than go for it. IMO the foam thing sounds pretty legit to me.
