Techniques to strengthen weak vocals

Thanks again for the additional feedback. I'm hesitant to post a clip...stuff lives forever on the internet, ya know. But I'll check in with our sound engineer to see what he does with the vocals and keep the advice provided in mind. Right now, I'm just happy to be back playing, my band called it quits about 7 years ago but now we're looking to hit the studio to record old songs that were never finished and to write new material. Woot woot!

Not sure what you mean by the wording of your post..

But whenever I record my voice I have to run it through an Equalizer.

My voice is a little "woofy' and low....so to bring it up more trebly and clear-sounding (for example the clarity of John Lennon) I have to doctor it before recording.

I also found the type and brand of mic used can have a profound difference.

Can't say without hearing it, but sometimes playing up the "bad aspects" of a recording and treating it as character can come off better than trying to mask them.

Take the Supremes as an example. Diana Ross has a squeaky voice but sounds amazing. It cuts through and fits right in. That character really works.
