Tell me how you like your Ibanez

I currently have 2 Ibbys ones 3 years old and the other is 5. both are still in fantastic shape as far as electronics and frets. I also have a 3 1/2 year old MIM fender and the pick ups went out about 6 months ago, otherwise still in great shape except for the pick ups.

2 months? :eyebrow: Maybe your doing something wrong? :smug:

I've had two Ibby's, although they're almost the same thing (SR505 and SR506). Both are fantastic basses, although I had to sell my SR505 a couple of years ago :( I absolutely love Ibanez basses and were it not for the fact that I'm already trimming down the stable, I'd be looking for a prestige model.

I have an SR400 that someone at my office gave me. It's not the greatest bass in the world but it plays like a guitar, so easy and comfortable. I wish it sounded a little better because I'd use it alot more if it did.

Ibanez makes a good bass for the buck, but I tend to be a little hard on instruments when I am playing. While on the road, I found that the electronics failed on me a few times. I don't slam my bass into the ground or anything like that, I just dig hard when I play. In comparison to the other basses I now have (Fender P5, Gibson Thunderbird 5 string) the Ibanez (the electronics, anyways) wasn't as enduring... on the other hand, the Ibanez neck was awesome. I sometimes wish I still had that bass, it was a good bass guitar to me when it was working...

I play Thunderbirds now - but for a long time I played MIJ SR-800's, an SR-885, SR-800FL and a few other SR series. Still have all of the 800's and the 885's

Ive had 4 Ibanez's. My first an SR200, my wife got it for me for my birthday. It's really fun and easy to play but lacks on tone and power. I then bought an SR500 and sold it to buy the ATK300. I really liked the SR500 and wish I still had it. The ATK is much more my speed though. I like the bigger neck and heavier bottom tone. The one Ibanez I did buy and didn't like was the Jet King. It just had next to nothing abywhere so I got rid of it. Now I mostly play my G&L and ATK. I would like to try a 5er some day though and that will probably be a SR505 or ATK305.

Ive got a 2001 SR800 that's beautiful to play. Thin necks great and fairly lightweight which is nice for those 3 hour gigs. The sound isn't everything I want tho, and I'm now looking at getting a MM ray for something different. We'll just have to see which one gets used more!

I believe the general consensus on Ibbys is something like this

Excellent value for money-great pricepoint-to-midrange bass

great construction and quality

Excellent playability (their best feature IMO) fast necks, light, comfortable etc.

Definitely a "modern" sounding bass

Tone is all in the finge-wait, i mean wood-no Tone is all in the ear, but in general more people consider Ibanez's basses not among the greatest tonally, thouhg they are certainly not bad

Moderate at best electronics

not a "vintagey" bass.

Get it. You won't regret it, especially if you play metal or more modern genres of music.

that particular Ibanez is currently the object of my modding dreams. It looks so hot, and I don't even like sunbursts! I'd love to get one and put some other pickups in it. It would be expensive though because those pickups are actually sized in length for a six string and their width is skinnier than typical*. so it would need new routings and probably some pickup rings. It would look super hot, though.

I suppose you could just grab some barts and skip all the modding, but Its a dream of mine to have some alumitones with an SR4 neck.

I have an EDB 550 and love it. its got the SR4 neck and some duncan designed pickups that make the bass sound closer to a fender type sound than people typically cite Ibanez for. The SR4 neck is one of the few necks that my girly hands actually enjoy on a regular scale bass.

One thing to note is that each variation of the SR basses (SR, SRX, SRT, SRA) has a slightly different neck shape and thickness that amounts to a drastically different feel. To the point that the SRT is a fairly fat neck, still retaining a slim width at the nut. You might do well to hit a well stocked music store and try each variation.

I hate my SR506. The neck isn't wide enough to justify me keeping it. On the other hand, I've been eying ATK's with a rosewood fingerboard. The 4 string ATK's are really starting to grow on me. I would have bought one during the Xmas blowout, but I don't like maple fingerboards.

Hated mine until i converted it to fretless and ripped out all of the electronics that fried after 2 months. The neck is way thin but usable. I only got it because it was cheap. And i will never pay for an ibanez again.

I have a GSR-200. I love my bass. The electronics though are an issue. I either blew my P pickup or part of my active pre-amp. When I have the volume not at the lowest on the P pickup it gets scratchy then completely cuts out. This happened after having a brand new D'Addario flatwound snap on me.

I debated just getting another bass, but I really do love playing this one so I'll be putting in some Lace Alumumatone P and J pickups on and converting it to passive. The Phat II bass boost will be converted to a pickup selector switch.

I have a BTB 1005.

I can walk into any gig anywhere and that axe will be appropriate somehow. If it were lost or stolen I would have to exact my revenge on the entire world, and then buy a new one.

Of course, they don't make them anymore.

But I'm very open to considering newer neck through versions that replaced the BTB 1005. I've lost count of the model numbers, but I know they sure look sexy.

But I'm not giving this one up.
