Any bass can be used for any genre, but some are more natural or stereotypical for certain genres than others. Of course the player has a great deal of the sound.

Please understand that Spector does indeed make wonderful instruments. It's their entry level product that doesn't quite live up to the "best bass in world" title, and neither does anybody else. $500 for a brand new bass is pretty cheap and that isn't leaving any room for extras. I was shocked mine came with such nice electronics. Now the Legends come with EMGHZ p'ups with the Spector TonePump preamp and they sound like stale garbage. Upgrading the preamp does wonders.

Their EuroLX line is great, they play great and feel excellent, but you pay more for that. A LOT more. Used they go for almost a grand and in some cases more. Don't swear off Spector just by the experiences of others, your results may vary.

The main point is, factor in the cost of a good setup if you buy a used instrument. If you buy new, only buy it from a shop that will include a full setup (yes, even fretwork if needed) and fresh strings in the purchase price. It's new for godsakes, it should be NEW.

Was planning on a used Warwick I found on the Net. But...we will see what I eventually decide. SO many freakin choices! LOL

God do I now feel old! LOL Getting advice from a bassist more knowledgeable than me who's been born since I graduated high school! Ugghhhh. LOL

The consensus is that "what you like might not be what I like", and "what I like might not be what Gary the Bass Freak likes", etc...


IOW, the "consensus" is that "there is no consensus".


Try out everything in your price range and see what YOU like.

well spector is my favorite from the ones Ive played, but its all in the ear of the player. In all reality most people wont know the difference between a spector, a laguna, and a tobias. until I played bass they all sounded toe same to me.

Exactly! That's how it is for me! LOL Guess I'll only get better with time in hearing that stuff.

Well, it's sad when people judge a brand from the lower end models.
(aka: "I play a spector legend, and no spectors aren't the best basses")
Someone who has a USA made Spector and say that they aren't, that is an opinion that matters to me.

Spector's statement is simply advertising puffery.

For the most part, when you're looking at basses, there aren't magical companies where you get something leagues better than something else for the same price.
