I'm equally comfortable on 4 or 5 string basses. A 6 needs to be narrow-spaced for me to like it. Had a Groove Tools 7 but it was way too big/heavy for me.
I find a low B comes in handy for many kinds of groove-based music. I generally don't like the sound of bass strings higher than G--sounds nasal to me, like a guitar with a head cold.
I've heard bassists absolutely slay on 6+ string basses; I've also heard ones who clash with the higher-range instruments and let the bottom drop out. I also feel that the temptation to stay in one position (especially open position) that comes with strings above G can lead to a much thinner sound than other musicians expect from a bass.
This works in certain contexts (solo playing, chordal pieces) etc., but not so much for support work. There's a lot to be said for exploring all the ranges of the bass--one thing I've discovered watching Jaco Pastorius on Youtube is how much he played across all 4 strings above the 12th fret.
There's something about the simplicity and comfort of a 4 string bass that's a relief to me. Also, staying into 4s means that there are literally millions more instruments out there to choose from.
