I thought this was the best place for it...

A drummer passed it on to me:

#1 "Thou shalt not f**k up the groove. F**k up the notes if thou must, but
not the groove."
#2 "Thou shalt not lust after thy guitar player's part. He keepeth the fun,
thou keepeth the groove."
#3 "Be thou not swayed by a drummer with crappy time, for thou art the
keeper of the beat."
#4 "Be thou not led into temptation before the gig. After is cool."
#5 "Thou pusheth thy luck with five strings, six is a mortal sin, for thou
hast no business in the upper register"
#6 "Thou shalt not thump with thy thumb, nor honk with a pick when thy
fingers are the way of truth."
#7 "Thou shalt not fear whole notes, for they can be the way and the
light."
#8 "Thou shalt leave the fancy s**t to thy bandmates, so they might wrestle
with their own bad taste."
#9 "Thou shalt change thy strings at least once per decade, whether they
need it or not."
#10 "Thou shalt tune thy bass before each and every gig, even though it was
in tune when last thou put it away"

#1- you f*** up, you f*** no matter what
#2- this sounds like there is an hierarchy in music which shouldn't be the case ... what about bass line that,s an integral part of the theme ... whatever
#3- everyone should have great time ... if you can't play in time when nobody play ... you're lacking and doom to stay in crappy band making crappy music
#4- ok that i'm oki with, drunk and drugs is f***ing stupid and more of a hindrance that try to hide the realy problem
#5- f*** you, I'll play whatever I want, you try to make rules out of something without boundaries
#6- Ok this is really ridiculous, I just can't beleive it
#7- Sure it can be interesting to make a contrast, but always play that ... no and this rules is also valid for every instrument
#8- Play jazz fusion or technical death metal
#9- Another stupid rule
#10- Duh ! like every other instrument !

My 10 commandments:

1. Thou shalt only play covers, never originals.

2. Thou shalt never play anything by Foreigner, Skynyrd, Clapton, Petty, or Mellencamp.

3. Thou shalt play with a pick or fingers, depending on the song.

4. Thou shalt never slap and pop.

5. Thou shalt always play through all-tube amps with heavy iron transformers.

6. Thou shalt always bring Motrin due to commandment #5.

7. Thou shalt always know your bass parts for every song before showing up to rehearsal.

8. Thou shalt always play a 4-string bass.

9. Thou shalt give in to GAS when appropriate.

10. Thou shalt repeatedly tell thy wife that you love her more than you love your bass gear.

As stated, those are *MY* 10 commandments. I do not expect anyone else to have those same 10. We are all different (thank goodness!!)

Forgive me, for I have sinned.

In fact the only 3 commandments I set well with are #2 (encroaching on guitar parts), #5 (would never own a 6'er), and #7 (whole notes...I use 'em all the time).

3 out of 10. Wow. Not good.

i need to repent.

With the exception of #1, I prefer your commandments.
