I have the NS cello, and I'm not completely happy with it, that's what is starting this whole search.

Something like this sound wise?

This is MUCH closer to the sound I'm after, thank you! That music is bizarre, but the cellos don't sound anything like cellos, which is a good starting point. Clearly they're using either a pickup or microphone, so maybe all I need is a good "metal pedal" or maybe I should have gotten a 5150

Part of your issue was not having magnetic pickups, which the CR Omni has. I thought this might suit better.

I think the right pedal is the answer, short of custom building an instrument. I think with the 27" cello scale, the bow, and the tuning anything is going to sound like a cello without help from a pedal. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're after.

I might look into something home-made anyway, hopefully to save a thousand dollars or so... or something customized - The NXT5 isn't so comfortable anyway, the neck is like a baseball bat. It puts a Gibson to shame. It's not only as wide as a 5 string bass guitar neck, it's as THICK TOO! I didn't measure it, but it's large enough to cause carpel tunnel pain (I don't have CTS but that's where I felt the pain after playing this particular instrument for a while...)

The guys in that video didn't seem to have a problem with feedback... I wonder how they did it! If I can solve THAT, then all I need is an appropriate pedal/amp!

While it's possible the OP is after a magnetic pickup tone, you may be on to something. Some warming/dirtying, and some, or a lot of, high pass filtering/guitar cab rolloff emulation might do the trick with a piezo.

You should contact Krappy Guitars. They make some pretty wild stuff that is actually playable. Kevin could definitely make what you want, but it will probably still sound like a cello if you use a bow. Good luck!

Easy, cut up mattress foam topper and stuff into cello, use mouse pads to block stage vibration though the leg. Or just get an inexpensive silent cello, like the ones you can find on Amazon for $300.
