Terrible Craigslist Ad

Here is the ad:

"Working Band Here Looking for Our New Lead Guitarist."

Nothing about genre, ages, instrumentation, how often they play out, etc., etc., etc. There are a lot of ads like that on BandMix too. They give NO information at all.

I'm not saying you should write War and Peace, but how about enough to know if it's worth an email or a phone call???

Would you answer an ad like this? What do you put in your ads?

I'll start - no, I wouldn't answer an ad like this. My ads contain genre, ages, instrumentation (including who sings), where located, short list of groups we cover, how often we intend to play out.

I've seen ones even more vague than that. Honestly, I don't know what people expect to lure in with ads like those, but I see them.

what's worse? I've posted a solid ad "bassist looking" sort of thing. I'm specific as to who I am, how I look, what I want (no start-ups, original bands, or country bands please!), and what information I would like to get back from anyone responding. just 4 simple questions such as, where do you practice out of? Does your band have a FB or webpage and where are they? What are you looking for in a bassist? How often are you gigging out per month?

pretty simple stuff. 90% of the time, I get a very vague inquiry back that fails to answer any of those questions or ignores the fact that I don't want to be in a start-up or original band. it's like people simply don't put a lot of time into these on either end.

that being said, I did find my most current band through craigslist. It's a crapshoot, but it can work. but like a dating site, you have to be willing to wade through a lot of losers and fat chicks before you find the hottie

I pretty much just use CL to find gear to trade and get new drummers. It is nice when there's some info, especially a photo, so I know to not bother contacting the drummers that post shirtless pics of themselves screaming behind their racks of roto toms

Yep. Those are best passed on or sold at yard sales.

Just recently I moved and had an old Sony 27" Trinitron that was not moving with me. It worked quite well but must have weighed 150lbs or so and it hadn't been used in years. No less than 8 people said they wanted it. One actually showed up, couldn't fit it in the backseat of his car, said he be back in an hour with his SUV and never showed. It went to the curb where some drive by dumpster diver must have taken it.

And selling gear on CL can be like a comedy show sometimes. Even if I price on the low side of current MV I'll get some ridiculous offers or requests for trades even when I state "cash only/no trades". There are at least two places where buyer can go to research current MV, Ebay and Reverb, yet few do or they'd realize that guitar XX is no longer selling for $300 anywhere. I don't even bother to respond to lowballers anymore.
