Double Bass Terry Plumeri

Thought you folks might dig this. I studied with Terry for a few years about 25 years ago. He was amazing then. He has just gotten more fluid and powerful.

He has been fairly low-profile over the last few decades for several reasons. Mostly he writes for orchestra and conducts these days. Here are bio info and music samples:

Had to bump this old thread. WHAT A SOUND. Like a duduk ( don`t know if that`s spelled correctly, ancient armenian wind instrument, the one on the Gladiator theme music ). Nothing like everyone else. Guy plays classical and jazz, conducts orchestras around the globe, composes music and film scores. A true artist and master of music and bass.

Someone said somewhere that he has his Spirocores really low and obviously he has very light touch. It breathes like no other. Somewhere between voice, wind instrument and occasional Jimi Hendrix

Hey Robert Strickland! That bowgrip is a sort of baroque grip, right? Could you explain his pizz technique a bit more in detail? I don`t know too much about this stuff yet

Yes, very baroque on the bow. His pizz approach is very light...just the tip of the finger...and only with a light movement fairly high up the fingerboard. Traditionally, jazz players use a pizz approach that is more into the string, with more "meat" on the side of the finger, more hand, wrist, arm, and even shoulder muscles involved, and usually lower down where they can dig in a bit more.

Thanks a lot! So, he propably uses very light touch to compensate low string height, keeping the pizz sound smooth. Kinda contemporary style of playing the bass. Beautiful music and masterful player, very unique voice.

EDIT: Or does that pizz style come from orchestral side of things?

Agree on the uniqueness of his voice. Very interesting player. I enjoyed the videos very much.

Even among contemporary jazz bassists, his technique is unusual. Intriguing.
