Testing all Basses

Learned this line from an IMA SM post; fun line; curious what it sounded like on each bass. Figured, might as well see what they sound like recorded. I've been working hard to get things to sound good, through amps, recording, pedals...anything. I've been mostly disappointed; I guess that's why its a chase. This one is no different, but the work is done.

Have fun!

XTC - All Basses Test

All this tells me is what they sounded like with that guy playing them through that rig, and now I gotta make sense of it through computer speakers or headphones? This tells me nothing, nor has any indication of what they feel like. What if the 'best one' has a too-big neck, sits funny on the strap, too heavy, etc.?

I never understand these comparison vids. I've seen too many guys with terrific basses and serious rigs sound awful, and guys with something that look like it fell off the truck twice after the fire sound like a million bucks. I appreciate the bunch of work the guy put into this and maybe it works for others, but it really tells me just about nothing.

XTC - All Basses Test

Top: Mustang. Second Tier: Ripper, 61P, Mbasses. Upper Middle: other FSOs, LP, MM, Dunable, parts Jazz, Lower Middle: 2011 Jazz (flats, so hard to really say), Rickenbacker, G&L Jazz, Bottom: G&L L-2000, T40, Warwick, Mike Lull

I think the Mustang needs a better set up.

The dominant factor is the amp, ans few basses are fully transcending that.

I prefer a solo sound on the brighter side given the mix, and on the brighter side than here and I'm fingers (albeit with nails). Versions in a mix would be useful as solo it's mid and overdrive heavy.

I've done something similar myself but with much less consistency and playing interrupted by pets, and not on camera, but enough for me to make decisions on what to keep that I am trying to enact.

The Ps were much of a muchness

Why do you watch it, if you don't like comparison videos? If the best best has too big a neck, practice more on a bass with a big neck. If it's too heavy, go to the gym more often.

Like you say in poker. If you can't spot the fish at the table, you're it! If you can't get any information out of such well recorded videos..

I watched it as it came up and I thought maybe this would have something useful and maybe it does for others.

I've been at this a long time and can play just about anything out there. Whether I like it or not is a separate question.

And I can spot the fish: They always take the hook . . .

This clearly was not made for you. It was made for me, so that I can improve my skill in getting a fire sound like a million bucks. Which was a possible outcome at the outset. This was an exercise. Practicing skills to achieve a better sound - at which I am much better for having completed this exercise. This is not a comparison or media content. I even used the word “test” very intentionally. It is practice that is fun, playing the bass that is fun, and I am better having completed it. Warning: I am going to do this again with very minor tweaks to the recording format to try and improve. I’ll also share that when I do it here, with other bass and sound enthusiasts. You should avoid that next test if it triggers you 😃

For me the Mustang and the 61 P and G&L were the best All the boutique were disappointing including the StingRay. All the Fender's will work for me though and was surprised by the Gibsons for this tune that you are playing
I was disappointed in the ripper, the LPB sounded ok to me. The mustang is just sneaky freaking good. Thanks for the input!

Not triggered at all.

I really appreciate the work you put into this and I'm glad you posted it as a lot of guys will get some good takeaways from it. That it didn't quite hit me the same as most is in no way to diminish the work you put into it, or the intent you had. Nice job.

All the Best

Haha, thanks. No offense taken, I like your honesty. Just keep in mind, this is a community, not a business. I even appreciate your feedback on the matter - not enough to change my approach. But when I do it again, I will improve again, and hopefully sound better. I think this sounds pretty crappy all around - even though it is very common recording practice: a DI straight off the bass, and a mic’d cab SVT blended.

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t know where I’ll go next, but this exact format is pretty easy to execute - but the overall outcome is mostly disappointing. Fun, for sure. But not substantive enough from a practical perspective. I need more out of it, we will see where it goes next!

I've run amp settings like that before and they work well in a mix but can sound meh solo. I would try them again in a mix, but you might need to use a royalty-free backing track to avoid copyright take down. The ranking in a mix might be very different.

One thing I noted is some high end basses in my bottom tier, but then they are also all pickups on, everything at maximum. That's not good with overdrive for several of them.

Yes, you’re right on for both points. 1) that’s one of my conundrums, sound solo, versus sound in a mix. I think I need to do the same exercise with a test mix. That’s probably exactly what I will do next. The intro, actually is a silly GK 250ML test that I could use.

2) I’m at my wits end with overdrive when I want clean and have dumped way too much money into. The SVT is the model for “plenty of headroom”; but in this test I have the Watt pre at 3 o’clock gain (just enough to get somewhat to unity), then both channels on the amp BELOW 11 o’clock on the volume. And it’s still hairy or overdriven. How does a 300 watt SVT break up with volume set well below noon??? It’s the same, but even lower on my 70s V4B. I’m so tired of overdrive or breakup at such low volume.
