Double Bass Texas All-State audition repertoire

I hate that etude....it's so dumb at the tempo the have you play it. You can't hear much musicality at that speed. Maybe thats just me.

Its just too fast.. I don't think many people are going to play it about 130...or at least not well. 115-125 is probably going to be where most people play it given all the string crossing and arpeggios. Its just a lot more solid a little bit slower.

Yeah Texas is that etude of death, another etude from that book, Mahler 2, Prokofiev 5, Dvorak serenade for strings, and some modern thing.

You get executed metaphorically, you miss a note, you go down like 10 chairs...good thing they take 41 bass players!

You were joking about the 41 players thing, right? If not, how big is the orchestra?

For TSYO (Toronto) ours consisted of the Beethoven 5 trio, stuff from last movement of Dvorak 8, Simandl 25 (bleh) and the Elephant. Not too bad, I guess.

Do you actually play Mahler 2 this season?

Jordan I'm guessing Texas has multiple orchestras. From what I've heard Texas has a HUGE all state program.

In Kentucky (I know, no one cares about Kentucky) we are playing excerpts from the music the top orchestra is doing which is Brahms academic festival overture, a little bit of grieg, and then some telemonn. Easy enough. Except the Brahms gets a little tricky sometimes but it's not too bad.

Best of luck to all!

Oh, ok, thanks. I'm unfamiliar with the all-state system. Each state has it's own program and different orchestras? Is there some sort of national orchestra that's associated with them?

This year we're doing Dvorak 8, Smetana Moldau, Firebird, Bloch concerto grosso op 1, Tchaik capriccio italien, and Hindemith symphonic metamorphosis of themes by Weber in TSYO, and some of those are quite nasty.

The Brahms is a great piece, enjoy! I've only ever played one baroque piece (brandenburg 3) with an orchestra. Telemann's an interesting choice.

Good luck! Sorry for hijacking your thread...

Texas has 2 full orchestras with 12 basses each (its a enormous orchestra. so loud haha) , then a string orchestra with 8 players then 3 wind bands with a few bass players.
and yes, we are actually playing Mahler 2 this year. I'm pretty excited.

I'm taking mine etude at 120 at most. It doesn't make sense to go faster.

Jordan m, there is a "honors orchestra of america". I don't think many people really know about it because I've noticed (especially in the bass section) that most of the people come from Kentucky, Indiana, and the chicago area. Or Maybe they are just that good. :-D
