Text Messaging

I use text messaging all the time. My phone has a fully "qwerty" keyboard, so it makes it very easy and fast to send messages or emails, or even post on TB. I do refuse to communicate with anyone who used that "text" or "IM" language.

y????? wut is so wrong wit talking like dat?
do u have sumthin against de kind of ppl who talk like dat?

I prefer a call over a message, but they come very handy as a low priority message and when you can't be sure if the person you are trying to contact is available. The fun part is trying to fit what you want to say into 160 letters without that "whr ru m8?" IM language, but it's usually possible.

I think there was some minor research done here about youth writing skills, and they actually thought that text messaging might improve their skills as kids need to think how to optimize the use of space.

Put me in with Mike N and Diggler. I do not send text messages. I have friends who send me text messages, and I call them back. They then ask me why I did not "text" them back. Simple I say....a phone is for TALKING.

I've had my phone for 2 or 3 years and I have sent... 3 text messages? And all 3 of those were to test it out. I don't dislike the idea of texting, I guess, but I do dislike how people do it so much (sorry Bob). I think that phones are for talking, not tpng lk ths so tht i can fit my 1600 chrctrs in instd of usng th phn for wht its for. <- that took me like a minute on the computer just to figure out how to type so stupidly, can't imagine how long it would take on a phone.

Anyway, they're pretty annoying, yeah.

I'll do it if I have one quick question and don't want to have to call someone, or if i have alot of downtime at work and I want to talk with a lady friend, other than that I wont text anyone

one thing that does make me mad though is when I don't have any more messages left for the month and people keeps sending me texts after i tell them to stop, and if i ignore them they text me 20 more times asking why i'm not answering

i use the T9 mode, which basically spells out words for you very easily.

so believe it or not, i would say that 99% of my text messages have proper spelling and grammar.

I do the same thing. The only short form I use is "txt" and "watcha" was in, watcha doing?

Other than that, proper grammar and spelling.

not with a good phone designed for texting

I text my wife all the time, usually when short messages will do or if im at work, or a gig, or church

My LG VX-9800 MP3 player, video player, internet access, up to 2Gig mem card accepted

+1, I rock The V as well... I pay 10 bucks a month for unlimited Verizon texts/calls, and 500 texts from others.

I love it. QWERTY 4 LYF

I'm in the thousands a month club...

I work at the police/fire/medical dispatch center for the city/county so can't talk on the phone. My wife was a paramedic and we got used to "texting" each other via the mdt in her ambulance/dispatch terminal at my desk when we worked.

Now that she's a stay at home type, we still text on the cell phone a lot. There's a lot of standard abbreviations used in emergency text calls that we both use, but I try to avoid the IM language when I can... but some of it creeps in. :rollno:

On a side note... I can't tell you how many times I've had to correct my talkbass posts because I've used the coding we're taught here. I find it nearly impossible to spell out the word "with" or any color. :smug:

The one text thing I DO hate is bloody TXT TLK.

TNAGRS WHO TPE W/O VWLS & IN CPTLS....!

I'm sure text messaging is wholly responsible for the decline in literacy in Britain's schools. I think phones should only send a message if every word has been spelled out IN FULL and correctly :D

+10000.

I hate and despise textspeak and resent its insidious creeping into our culture. Then again, I hate any laziness with language - language is something to take pride in. The decline in literacy is at least partly attributable to text messaging, but also because kids are no longer encouraged to read proper books, and apparently teachers aren't allowed to mark kids down for bad spelling anymore. Something about discriminating against the dyslexic. That's just political correctness gone mad, in my opinion. God bless Harry Potter - at least those books have got kids back into reading somewhat.

I heard a story last year about a schoolkid who wrote an essay entirely in textspeak. After the teacher marked it and gave it back, covered in red pen and getting 0/10, the kid asked, "what's wrong with it?".
