Calling Pennywise punk rock is about as accurate as calling them prog or bebop. They're a bro band.

but again, the sub-genre stuff is lame. sorry to argue with you this much but its one of my personal pet peaves
Sub-genres are only descriptive tools to give a general idea of what something might sound like. Just as it would be misleading to call Handel "Romantic," it is misleading to call Pennywise punk.
Even within a genre, if there's enough variation, just saying the genre won't really give you any idea what the band sounds like. For example, just saying that At the Gates is "metal" doesn't say a whole lot about them. But describing them as "swedish death metal" or "melodic death metal" does.
Some people think that sub-genres are some sort of label that's imposed on people or that people try to fit into. Many of those that object think they're cool for being non-conformists or some crap. They're totally missing the point. Sub-genres are not some sort of label that people are forced into. They are merely ways of describing sound, the same as "jazz" or "hard rock" are. Duke Ellington and Led Zeppelin are both music, but just saying that doesn't really tell you much about them, or how completely different their styles are from each other.

works for me too. i dont own em but i played them a couple of times. simple basses but a lot of character.
I know a lot of people hate Rancid, but Matt's playing and tone I always thought was like, the best punk bass I've ever heard.

I don't want a link to a Pennywise song because i am on dial up internet so it would take me an hour for a song.
Also, I've heard somewhere that arguing on the internet could give you a pass to participate to specials olympics.

He was talking of Fat mike from NOFX using a Danelectro i think. But you are sure right that Matt freeman is the best mother****ing bass player of punk. IMO
Oh, I know, I was just bringing up other punk players who sound awesome. Also, his instrument is simple but his tone has a lot of character.
i get what your saying. I have trouble trying to explain my own bands sound. But it still falls under the broad genre of "punk rock" if you ask me. I like where your coming from though.

I view it kind of like the classification of species. Every level of getting more specific gets more descriptive.
My band is best described as melodic black metal. We're not trying to sound like any other band, but given the style we naturally write in and play, that's just the best description of our sound.
Then there are bands like Primus. They're sort of the Platypus of the rock world, as they're not like anything else.

anyway, matt is probably the most unique punk bassist. he inspired me too incorporate walking bass whenever we play punk.
nowadays, i tend to just play straight 8ths with a bit of fills here and there. vintage bases work well for this. think of danos, tb, and Precisions.

I just put some roto 77s on my T-bird and banged out a few Cure songs and their great! I've tried a lot of strings and these definitely bring the punk out!
