I think my ultimate setup would be, instead of a more traditional 2x10 and 1x15, something more along the lines of a 2x12 and also something completely massive like the accugroove grande whappo (21").

Are there any other cabs that compare to the Grande?

Unless you are playing a stadium, I would think the grande whappo would sound way to muddy in the normal club atmosphere. I can pull tons of low end from my 4x10. Sometimes, to much.

im not sure if there still around, but peavy did an 18" with two tens, might be a little more realistic, and a little less muddy? i shall go and have a gander, i remember seeing one on UK ebay not so long ago.

I have one of those Peavey cabinets with one 18" and two 10" speakers. It's called a model 1810. It's got a very full sound. I also have a Peavey horn tweeter in it's own mini cabinet. I can run just the big 1810 cabinet, or add the horn too. I actually bought it originally for an electronic drum kit, but it's designed as a bass rig. It's not small, but I added casters to the bottom, so it's not too bad. Built like a brick ****house too.

They are hard to find, but PEavey also did a 3620 and 1516 cab. The 3620 had two 18s and two 10s; the 1516 was a 15 and 2 8s.

I can attest that the 1810 cab with a Mark III series head was just f---ing intense.

Personally, I think a nice Hartke 2x15 cab would be plenty to detonate the first five rows of nearly any venue!

I went into a car audio shop one time and was amazed at what greeted me at the door. On a stand they had an aluminum cone 32" speaker. I'm not sure how it would do on bass, but I can't imagine it would struggle on a low B too much.

I recently picked up an 1810 pretty cheap - cosmetically, it was a bit rough, but cleaned up nicely(a little contact cement and black paint *can* go a long ways) - but speaker-wise, it was good to go... The 18" BW looked practically new, and the 10" Scorpions were nice, too - I only paid $140 with a 2 year warranty, so I figure for that kind of money, the 18 was worth it for a spare for my PA subs... It sounded decent in the store, but when I got it home and pushed it with my Mark VIII - it sounded VERY good: PLENTY low, yet decent enough highs... My main rig is a 410 TXF on top of a Paradise Soundworks 115(BW loaded) - and I'm quite happy with it - but I wouldn't hesitate to use that 1810 by itself - and when combined with my 410 TXF, it sounds GREAT!!! I figure it never hurts to have a kick-a$$ cab laying around for a "spare" - and especially when it was so cheap...

i can attest that the PV 1820 with mark 4 head was massive sounding. At least that is how i remember it. thing is, it was massive dimensionaly and in weight as well. heavy, but clunky too.

the 1516 held lots of promise in concept, and oh how i gave it a try. size wize it was not overpowering at all... in low end it came up short.
I remember really wanting that cab to work for me. It jsut SEEMED like what I should be using. I traded it in for sumthin.

another 18 my buddy had was the bullfrog. i remember thinking it's name was awesome, but I dont remember anything else about it.

Some guy near me was selling a Peavey 2x15 and Peavey 1810 for really good prices. $125 for the 2x15 and $150 for the 1810 or $250 for both. I called on the 2x15, but I don't have a car big enough to fit a 3-4' tall 120 lb. monster.
