Tag yourself. I'm #1(ish) and #5.
I know I've missed some. No offense intended to anybody; you know I love you all.
I know I've missed some. No offense intended to anybody; you know I love you all.- The hoarder. Has lost count of their basses. Hasn't played In a band since before getting married.
- The alpha stomper. Has at least 3 pedal boards and several spare pedals. Declaims at length about the nuanced differences between dirt, fuzz, overdrive and distortion. Tone is not complete until every slot on a board is filled.
- The classic rocker. P bass, flats, tort. You know them well. Has no interest in any instrument designed after 1965 or any music produced since 1972. Likes both kinds of basses: the original P and the split P.
- The pickup aficionado. Puts $600 of pickups into a $200 bass.
- The "tone is in the fingers" purist. Eschews pedals, amps, cabs, and signal processing. Plugs straight into the board. Trolls the pedal and tonewood threads.
- The tonewood fan. Swears they can hear the difference between pao ferro and rosewood fingerboards. Pretends videos of instruments made of concrete, colored pencils and thin air don't exist.
- The pro. Plays a beat-up POS partscaster through whatever is backlined. Doesn't post much, too busy gigging.
- The builder. Magically creates works of art from twigs and branches and posts detailed threads for us mortals to marvel at.
- The cover band ace. Knows hundreds of songs note-for-note and can sub in any pop, rock or country cover band at a moment's notice without rehearsal. Sings backup, and maybe lead on Mustang Sally or Wagon Wheel.
- The engineer. Regularly called upon to patiently explain impedance, port sizing, why mixing cabinets can either work or be a disaster, and the importance of keeping the magic smoke inside the amp.
- The tone chaser. Wants to emulate the exact tone of their favorite bassist by replicating the gear used. Having replicated the exact signal chain but not the technique, wonders what else can be purchased to get a little closer to the recorded sound.
- The iconoclast. Hates FSOs. Loves Gibsons and swears none of their 12 nearly-identical non-reverse t-birds neck dives. Can't understand why Gibson won't reissue the Grabber or the Ripper.
- The beginner. Wants to know what the best bass for ____ is and how best to learn the notes.
