Got an newsletter-email from Sweetwater the other day and one of the links in it was to an article on the 9 best bass distortion pedals for 2025

Did yours make their list?
If not, what are you using?
I use the Pork & Pickle

The list:
EarthQuaker Devices Zoar Dynamic Audio Grinder Distortion Pedal

Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff Pi Bass Fuzz Pedal

BOSS BB-1X Bass Driver Pedal

Aguilar AGRO V2 Bass Overdrive Pedal

IK Multimedia ToneX One Amplifier/Cab/Pedal Modeler

Way Huge Pork and Pickle Smalls Bass Overdrive Pedal

Ampeg SGT-DI Bass Preamp Pedal and DI

Tech 21 dUg Pinnick Signature Bass Distortion Pedal

Line 6 POD Express Bass

The article is online here:

Not really. I'm mostly using the Boss OD-3 (NOT the ODB-3) for boost / dirt. I have (but haven't much used) the deluxe version of the Big Muff Pi, I guess that sort of counts.
I would think the deluxe version would count too. Not that it matters. I'm just curious to see how much of their list equals real world use from bass players vs what's not on their list.

There’s a difference between amp simulators, distortion etc.

Including the SGT-DI without mentioning the origin effects seems strange. The SGI-DT is quite good but it’s not just OD.

For just OD, the kassleder jellyfish is fantastic. Also like the grizzly.

The pork and pickle is loved by many but to me no matter how I set it it seems more like a blended fuzz even in the pork setting, which is cool if that’s what you want.

I wouldn’t put any of those in the top 10 but hey….
I can't say anything for 8 of 'em. But the Pork & Pickle has been pretty darn good for me, I would put it top 10 and and I'm not an OD/Fuzz person. And here on TB there's a lot of variation among us on what we run, a lot of it never on any list of any kind, hence my curiosity about the list vs what members here are using.

I run the Pork & Pickle sitting between a Laney Black Country Customs "The Custard Factory" compressor and a Sushi Box "More" 2 tube preamp then into my Mesa D-800+. I run those 3 pedals, comp > od/fuzz > compressor all the time.

I haven’t played the v2 Agro but based on my experience with the v1 I wouldn’t call it a bass heavy box, so I hope something got updated for Sweetwater to make that claim. My v1 was a struggle to keep the low end from vaporizing.

I’m mainly running a SansAmp BDDI v2 and a couple of less common boxes ahead of it. I have a Night Owl v2 Parabellum, a Dunwich Wizard Fuzz, and a couple of Gojira FX clones (like the Tanto OD) in rotation.

Never played any of those but that doesn't mean much. OD is one of those weird effects where I just used a BDDI for 20ish years until it died and then got a Two Notes Le Bass the cover the warm/mild OD/pre sound of the BDDI but with a nasty OD side plus MIDI, so I honestly haven't tried out a ton of OD's. In HS my Eden Navigator could get some light signal breakup. Out of the 100+ pedals I've owned/sold/etc I think 4 of them were OD's (two mentioned above plus EQD Plumes and a Bogdan Polish Love). Been through a ton of fuzzes, though, so maybe that's just more my thing.

I like my Catalinbread SFT (classic Ampeg-style), and though I’ve ended up using it much less, I also really like my Catalinbread DLS (classic Marshall-style) on the Superbass internal dip switch setting

These lists will typically focus on manufacturers whose sales the list-maker is trying to boost - whether it’s a dealer or an industry magazine. Best to get reviews from Talkbass, or develop your own.

These are on my board currently:
- Fuzzrocious Cat Tail
- Blumes
- VT Base DI (used primarily for OD/EQ but also provides a DI backup)
- built in distortion options in my Darkglass M500v2 amp

I also use a SGT DI for silent practice at home, or when I want to leave my pedal board or amp at home.

I like having variety in dirt, because I’m in a cover band.

On a shelf in my home office reside several others:
- Mojo Mojo
- Green Russian BMP reissue
- Behringer super fuzz clone
- Joyo Orange Juice
- Joyo Orange sound
- Joyo California
- EQD Hoof
- what am I doing, I can’t possibly list them all here
