The $99 bass experiment

Ye p - Fender isn't the only one that can turn out nice, low cost instruments. The big difference is, as you have found out - the consistency. The factory making the Blue Rock bass is probably not automated, and still using relatively unskilled labor and minimal QC. This situation is changing daily in China as labor costs go up up up. There's hardly any labor in newer designed products compared with a few years ago.

Some of our vendors give us "open quotes" where each cost is specified and I am so surprised to see how little labor there is in new products.

Really nice looking bass. Pickguard looks great with midnight wine or whatever they might call that color, bridge and pickup covers always look good on a dark body, and the maple fretboard is a big plus.
It'd make a nice Christmas present for someone who was just starting to play and needed a bass. I'd sure be happy finding that under the Christmas tree. Hey, I'd be happy giving it to someone and watching their face as they unwrapped it.
Either way, hard to go wrong for that kind of money.

Op here. Sorry. Social function and just seeing the questions now. Yes Calgary. Yes Golden Music. Great guy who runs the place, sad to see it go.
I've already tweaked the truss with no issues. Tuning we'll see. I play hard and that will be apparent very quickly.
As for the build history I can only add that it has a serial number and model stamp and claims to be hand built in China. Not sure what that entails or if it's true.
Also I guess this post should be called the $87.18 Bass Experiment given the current exchange rate between Canada and the states.

I would guess at this point I've owned probably 40 boutique quality basses, lost track at some point of sales and restocks, yes I'm a total gear whore. I'm shocked by some of the quality to price ratios I've been seeing as of late, not so much out of China but actually Indonesia. 2 months ago just out of boredom and a couple bucks burning a hole in my pocket, I bought an Epiphone Toby Standard in white for $199 at a local Best Buy. I was expecting Squier levels of inconsistency but I was surprised at how good they are and that I didn't have to search for "the one with the good fret work".

A little neck adjustment, some minor action tweaks, the intonation was already spot on, a set of D'Addario Pro Steels and blam, can't put the thing down. It weighs like 6 pounds, has tons of tone and good sustain and if something goes wrong, at that price I consider it the equivalent of a disposable razor. Thinking of getting a couple more just in case they stop making them.

Look forward to hearing how your gig goes!

Cheap basses can often outdo their more expensive cousins, all depends what you're asking of them. That being said;
My first bass was a Washburn XB120 bought for £99 but it's turned out to be a bit of a pig fit only for crazy downtuning or throwing around on stage. Truss rod won't hold solid for love nor money, the frettboard wood warped so it's unplayable above the 12th, the master volume pot broke and the jack fell apart. From the online reviews I've read it seems like I own the world's only poopy 120, everyone else praises them for reliability.. guess that makes it that bit more special, though!

Great find - I hope it works out for your gig!

On principle, I refuse to buy/play an instrument that runs me over the $1000 price-range (new or used) when one can find such high quality and gig-ability in a $299 Squier (and the like) basses (after some creative discounts and preordering, I got my Squier Deluxe Active Jazz V for something around $180 new). That's not a dig at people who regularly play and gig basses like Foderas or Roscoes - just saying' I never could.
