Isn't that the benefit to using top woods? You get to reap the benefits of the core wood with the aesthetics of the top woods? Who cares if it's got a knotty core?

maybe I'm out of my depth here, but if I was paying that much for a bass, I would never strip it down to its bare wood. So how would I know what was underneath an opaque finish? I would want real wood too, though. So i certainly agree with what you're saying. But at 5K dollars, a bass had better be exactly what I want now and forever, so I would never know what was underneath. I wouldn't strip it, check the quality of wood and then refinish it, that's for sure.

First off I'm a Fender guy but was never impressed at the CS line from Fender. I have only played a few but always came away with ..really? for that much? I would buy an American Standard or top line MIM 70's RI, roadworn or a builders custom model over a Fender CS...anyday.

Looks good but not $5000 good. I'd just take my p bass apart and have a custom shop paint my 2011 American Standard for $200-400, and save myself $3700.


Another thing that's always puzzled me is why some of these $5000 custom shop basses don't have a better truss adjustment nut. The AM Std's at least allow for you to make adjustments without removing the neck, but some of these RI and CS basses have the old phillips head screw.

The bass is really nice looking. 5k nice? No. There's nothing complex electronics wise or build wise in a p bass. I guess since it says "fender cs" they can slap a 5k price tag and feel alright about it.

I just wonder where the demand is for this? It is priced as a pro's bass, but if I were a pro, I wouldn't necessarily want to be seen playing another guy's sig. bass. So, as for semi-pro and weekend warrior? $5,200 is really out of the ball-park for most I would think, right? I guess that leaves the collectors...

I agree with the comments that at the end-of the day, it is still a P bass with P bass electronics. I would (and have) paid premium price for CS basses (after a LONG time saving my $$), and I find them a step up personally in terms of woods, construct, sound and playability - but the most I paid is half of this one and that (personally) gives me a bass I love and would be happy to gig with - inevitable dings and spills and all...

At the end of the day though, to each their own and I can respect that.
