Beatles in my view, and George Martin was a HUGE reason for that. I don't like the Stones really, too sloppy and I don't like Mick's singing. Kudos to them for making it this far but please stop playing the same songs you did in the 1960's.

The more I think about it, not even close. The Stones had a few good albums but to me almost every Beatle album (1965 on..) was a jem.

Actually, the Beatles biggest rival in this country was the Dave Clark Five at first, the Stones came later. The Beatles were the girls group while the Stones were the bad boys group. When they first came out the quality was very close. Through the years the Stones stayed a Rock and Roll Band and are, maybe, the best garage band of all times. The Beatles changed rock and roll into something else which many call improved. It's all in what you like and I love them both. (And Dave Clark Five)

Back in the day, I was more of a Beatles fan, though I liked the Stones too. But given their incredible longevity, and enormous catalog, I have much more respect and affection for the Stones today, than back in the day. But if we're going to reach back that far in time, another great band was the Rascals, who in a way, were the quintessential 60's band. They covered all the soul, rock, psychodelia sounds of that era in a way that few could match.

The Beatles will always be my #1, but if The Stones and The Who were playing in adjacent venues on the same night (circa 1975) I'd prefer to catch The Who in concert. To me their music was more complex and immediate than The Stones, although The Stones were hard to beat in a live setting. Today I'd rather see Rush in concert than either The Stones or The Who. YMMV.

Love the Stones but the Beatles were the greatest band ever.
The Beatles had it all and did it all....writing, vocals, musicianship, production and rightfully so- popularity and staying power. They heavily influenced an entire generation, they were constantly evolving- after everyone followed their lead into psychedelic rock-they changed gears and put out the White Album. And they later went out on top with what may have been their greatest album (Abbey Road).
The Stones are without a doubt legendary and for me they peaked in the late 60's and the seventies and put out some great music ( up to and including Some Girls) and they too were a great influence.
There are a few other legendary bands (Who, Zep, Genesis, Aerosmith, Rush, VH to name a few)
...but I don't think it is fair to compare any band with the Beatles

This argument has been going on since I was fourteen years old. [a very long time ago] My love of music applies to both bands, I thought they both balanced each other out pretty well.

I think that your poll really should have included a "both" button. They are both legendary bands, obviously. As we are still having this argument 50+ years after the fact. No other band can make that kind of claim to music history.....save Black Sabbath.

I remember this being a big, hairy deal when I was, probably, in 5th or 6th grade. Standing in the lunch line one day with the Beatles/Stones shrapnel flying all around me I said aloud that my favorite band
was The Supremes. I'll never forget a kid named Tony Lancelotti yelling out "Wattru, a FAG?!" (With Sister Mary Holycard standing 6 feet away). I didn't have any idea what a 'fag' was, but I got the distinct impression that I didn't want to put it on my resume. I hope Tony is as happy as I am these days.
In retrospect: The Beatles, The Supremes and about 200 bands before I get to The Stones...

Well, if you are trying to dis me I get it, but Paul plays and sings a lot better than any of the Stones now in 2014, in my view. Hell, I thought Ringo looked and sounded great in the tribute earlier this year.

I respect the Stones music and like the Sticky Fingers album but I would choose the Beatles any day.
