The Beginning: My first build

Your best bet when putting together the neck, is make sure any pieces stay within the nut width and any other pieces near the edge of that are continuous all the way down (thicker outer laminates). I did the same as you on my headless..... If you add pieces to the sides (if I'm understanding right) the runoff will still show, when you shape the neck. It's not a deal breaker for structure, just the visual.

Thanks RC, looks like I should be ok. I forgot that this is just the rough cut. When I got my fingerboard down to size I realized that my original calculations were correct and the bloodwood should show down the whole length of the neck. More pics later.

Ok, stopping for the night. Finished the fingerboard and got the headplate shaped. Tomorrow shaping the neck starts, then the body.

OK, latest photos. Got the nut and fingerboard glued to the neck and the pickup slots cut. Started the shaping process on the body to see what it will look like. Lots of sanding an shaping to do. Holes to be drilled for peghead, control cavity to be routed. Never an end to the work.

Latest photos after shaping the body and neck. The bass is basically shaped, still have to work to do on the upper neck and the peghead as well as minor shaping. Any comments are most welcome.

Well, it's been awhile since my last post. I ran into a major problem and had to re-group. I had routed the control cavity after I had shaped the body. Bad mistake, the cover would not fit over the opening and I could see no way to correct the mistake.... so I cut the neck from the wings and started over. Now I have a mahagony body with the bloodwood top. I have also added a dragon inlay that I have carved into the body from Lacewood. everything else is still on track to remain the same. Still deciding if I am going to stain the dragon to get it darker. let me know what you think Please.

Finally, a little progress. It seems that I messed up the fingerboard. Had to take off and replace. Then decided that the dragon needed to be brighter so removed lacewood and replaced with curly maple. Now am gluing new fingerboard on and getting ready to finally see some results.

That looks extremely awesome! I love your dragon concept...i might have to try something like that...when i get skills hahaha
